Just looked in an old Model Railroader from 1999. Has an SOO Line layout on the cover. Saw a neat idear for and functioning coal loader using an auger bit and '73 Subaru wiper motor. Just checked a few junkyards and cl ads, nothing. What else might work?Has to be strong, yet small.

How about an old printer or scanner? Sometimes they use a spiral shaft to move the carriage back and forth, instead of a belt. You have the motor and built-in auger all in one there. And there's PLENTY of old printers around for parts! They are probably powerful enough to move scale coal, anyway. Old floppy drives used the spiral shaft as well, to move the heads. But those have shorter shafts, like 2-3 inches. The printers have longer shafts. Uh, oh, am I crossing a line here?

I found mine but its way too small. Jerry is right an old printer sure has one with the motor. If you can't find one my buddy has a electronic repair shop I should be able to get you one. Let me know. Ken

Old flatbed scanners are also candidates for using a spiral shaft, although the one I have is belt-driven. But some may use a spiral shaft, too. Never know.
