How many times have you cussed looking for a small item like a drill bit or tap, they get lost in huge tool boxes, but most containers are so oversize they waste space. I found a solution for my drill & tap storage - dried up permanent markers! I like to reuse things, so when one of my label markers finally gave it up, I decided to see what was inside. I pulled the halves apart , easier than I thought. Hmm. Tip was dry, inside was dry. I cut the tip off, and got my newly bought 2-56 drill bit and tap, and put them inside. Closed it back up, got a label and cut to size, marked it up, and Voila! Small storage container, large enough to find ( and label ), but small enough to not take up alot of space in a toolbox, and easy to spot. Here's the result -

I'd imagine ink pins would work as well, although harder to label those they're a bit small. But these markers are excellent for this application. Now, just go steal all your kid's markers, and let them dry out! LOL.

While a clever idea, two things come to mind;

1/. can't you put these in a rack as in shanks into a wooden block to have them handy

AND

2/. the Sharpie container now takes up significantly more space in a drawer or toolbox than before-especially if you have several. A little more effort involved to retrieve and replace it as well...

Like the imporov though!

#1 - I COULD, and DO , have a set (somewhere ) at/near my workbench ( when I can reach it, cluttered up again ), although I apparently haven't labeled it to find easily (yet) One reason I want to have one in my TOOLBOX at all times, not my workbench, the toolbox is more accessible,and I can find it (generally). I know all that is personal organization issues, but I find it better (for me) to keep one in my toolbox than at my workbench, to locate easier.

#2 Since I generally only use 2-56 and 4-40, and they'll both probably fit into ONE sharpie, the extra space it takes up won't matter to me, FINDING it easily does. Trying to FIND them loose in my toolbox clutter is my problem. So I'd rather take up the space with a visible Sharpie "container" than save some small amount of space, and have to dig through it all constantly looking for those tiny little pieces. The Sharpie will be WAY easier to locate quickly! I may replace the top tip section with a smaller cap, or cut it off and plug it. I'll see how it works out for me.

Well now that makes perfect sense to me, Jerry.

Well until you try to absently write a note with it!
