Hi guys!

This is a project I started tonight. The rough work is done, Now I clean the parts, paint the shell & chassis and assemble:

I started with a Mantua 0-4-0 Booster steam loco which was missing the front steps. I used the front pilot truck, deck & steps from an Athearn light Mikado and the trailing truck from an Athearn Little Monster 0-4-2 steam locomotive.

I will be adding the piping detail and a couple air tanks from the Athearn Mikado

I have not yet decided if I want to add valve gear. I plan to sell it on eBay, so I probably wont. I tend to keep the good stuff for myself. The goal is this:

This one was also custom built by me with old mantua 0-4-0 Booster and junk Athearn light Mikado parts pulled from the scrap box. I added Athearn light Mikado pilot decks to both the front and rear. The pilot steps and trailing truck are also from the same Athearn Mikado. This one was sold on eBay a few years ago. Took one evening to build, paint and complete. Sold on eBay for ~$110. Not bad for a bunch of parts pulled from two scrap boxes. I started the bidding at $0.99.

Nice work, Sean. $110 ain't too shabby for a night's work. I like the look of that pilot. Do you have a lot of junker Athearn Mikados?

Thanks! Yeah, I was quite surprised by it.

I have at least 10-15 I think. Maybe more. I purchased some 30 a few years back. I have saved most of the pilots, trucks and detail parts for projects like this.

Were they all dead due to split axle gears?

I just picked up a Mantua Booster 0-4-0 off e-bay for $3.00
It is missing the nylon retaining plate. I have ordered the #754 valve gear kit and intend to get it working as soon as I get set up at my new home.

I have the parts sheet for it and I am missing part #3964 and its called retaining plate, nylon which holds the running gear in place.
I'd send a picture but since I moved I can't find the cable for my camera.

I take it yours is the early verison with the mix of metal and plastic drivers and the plastic chassis frame?

Is this the part:

If so, I just pulled it from the trash. Today is your lucky day. PM me your address and I will mail it this weekend.

If you had as many parts as I do, you would also be trowing some away... Sometimes just too much to deal with.

I re-posted it Ben... I am pretty new to the whole web-based forum thing. Did not realize it was in the wrong area. I tried to remove it, but could not see how to do it.

WOW! Doesn't take much to dress up those things does it? I have about 3 or 4 unbuilt / unfinished kits of those that the late George Bennett bequeathed to me, waiting for the right "spark" to get me to put em to use.

Luckily for you I don't have any other steam locos or parts to cannibalize, or I'd probably steal that idea!

I was always under the impression that the Athearn steamers are fairly scarce. I'm sure they turn up online but I can't recall ever seeing one at a train show. And you've had some to scrap and pillage? Man, I bet your stash is the stuff of dreams!

TONY!!! LOL It's you!

OMG! I am so sorry to hear about George Bennett! He was a really nice guy. I sent him an email a little while ago and I had not heard anything back, I guess I now know why! Did you get all his stuff? If so, i would say you are also quite a lucky man!

That restoration you did on his Crusader was just killer, that is why I want you to do mine!

I have a ton of the Athearn Light Mikados and parts ~20 I would guess, plus detail parts & pilots from about 10 more. You can have as many as you need... We need to work out a deal..

Man! I am so saddened to hear about George. He was such a nice guy!
