Kosmos Timber Company's #11 HO Brass standard gauge 2-6-6-2
This is unit # 37 of only 208 units made:

This is how it looked when I sent it to by buddy to restore:

In keeping with the steam theme so far, here's my LOTW, unfinished/unstarted kit by Roundhouse, #319 Wild West Show, no. 447 of 500 kits made. Picked this up this past week for $25 at a LHS. I've started removing flashing already from the engine and tender chassis's. Looks like a nice unit.

What do you modelers recommend for removing flashing? I used dykes to cut the big pieces off, but for the fine "teeth" flashing, do you use a file? Flat or round? Does this cast material load up the file like lead would? I don't want to ruin these parts by using the wrong tool and cut or gouge off too much material. Thanks for any tips.

Nice collection of steamers this week, dudes. Toptrain's CNJ F units are looking sharp and busss's EC is a gem! From my final IHC-ish set:
IHC Modern American steam locomotive for the Chicago & NorthWestern. This is a great little runner and has become one of my most utilised engines. Big iron may claim all the glory but for yard work or local freight duty, locos like these rule the rails!

Thanks, I have it pulling 4 heavyweight Athearn cars currently. They just look good together. Only issue is that the old open Mantua motors are not the best at slow speeds. I may re-motor it with a Yardbird can motor kit at some point.

Tim, you can replace the original magnet with neodymiums, which will really help your low speed performance. The two stacks I put in this in this 0-6-0 make it run like it has a can motor.

Do you know when your loco was made? I've never seen a large Mantua steamer with plastic valve gear and a standard crosshead guide.

I bought it as NOS at the RIT train show for $30 two years ago. Forget the box color. It does have metal valve gear. How can I tell the age from looking at the train?

I should have said plastic valve gear hanger, not the linkage itself, because it's more like the hanger on the Chattanooga. Never seen that style before or since, though.
If I had to guess I'd say it was made in the late 80's or early 90's when they took back the Mantua name and were doing different things like this, but before they started using can motors.

Hi Shayman,
Don't test a good motor by sticking neodymiums to it, unless you're sure you're going to replace the original magnet. I've learned the hard way that it completely overwhelms the alnico magnet -- basically shorts it -- and leaves it with virtually no magnetism. I did this to a motor in an old Gilbert Hudson, and replacement was difficult because the magnet is a disc with the poles along the edges.
Neodymiums are so powerful that sticking them to the side of the the motor will make it run, but for optimum power you need the maximum amount of surface area in contact with the pole pieces, so they should be installed in place of the original magnet.
Try Emovendo: http://www.emovendo.net/
He has a huge selection, and he's the only dealer I found who had the disc magnets I needed. The magnets in the photo are actually from (believe it or not) the bottom of my old Sonicare toothbrush heads. I cut them off and soak them in lacquer thinner to remove their black coating. They're small enough that they can be stacked and put into just about any motor.
I think this has been posted before, but DarthSantaFe on the MR forum has a thread about it.

You know, I have one too. Never saw one since until now. I thought mine was a custom kitbash or something. I guess not now. Must have been factory. I think I would guess it to be no earlier than the 1980's to the 1990's, at least.
