What is the best voltage for a new or used CD drive motor to use in a Tyco. I seam to end up with motors that are 3 or 5 volts and in the past they don't hold up.
Can the motors come from old laptops? I have also found motors that have a plug in type deal and that makes it difficult to figure which lead to use.
I have 2 repowers that currently run.

Thanks for the info. Heres' a link to my first replacement motor.

It depends on the individual motor. Most I've found have been marked 5.9v and run comfortably in the 15v range, but others won't tolerate it. I just cannibalized and old CD ROM and got two 5.9v motors out of it, but they scream at anything more than half throttle, making them useless. Powering two trucks and wiring them in series would solve that problem.

A 3 volt motor just isn't going to cut it, though I haven't come across one yet. The other issue with all of these motors is that they have precious metal brushes (wipers, really) that aren't nearly as sturdy as carbon brushes in higher current applications. Opening a disk tray or positioning a laser head draws a lot less current and is a much shorter duty cycle than powering an HO locomotive. The brushes on the first motor I installed in my Chattanooga wore through, and I had to swap it for another one.

Thanks NP759,
That's interesting about the dual powered trucks solving the voltage demand put on the motors, (because you wouldn't need to use as much throttle?)
So the CD replacement motor procedure has a bit of luck to it as far as durability? I've had 2 go bad and two that still run but are not used much. I have tried to get motors at my school and it's hit and miss as to whether the voltage is 3 or 5.

BTW I have put resistors on both of the remaining CD repowers on both sides of the motor in an attempt to keep them from burning up.

Hi AF,

"BTW I have put resistors on both of the remaining CD repowers on both sides of the motor in an attempt to keep them from burning up."

But the resistors probably will. You're going to need a power resistor to handle the maximum current one of these motors can draw under load, otherwise it's going to burn up. Since wattage is voltage x current, and these motors can draw about 450 milliamps under heavy load, .45 x 15 volts = 6.75 watts. That means you need a 7 watt resistor to handle the current, which isn't going to fit in the loco.

Wiring two 6 volt motors in series, assuming they're identical, will divide the voltage equally between them. I put a second power truck in my Rivarossi GG1 and wired them in series, so it runs at half the speed. Since the motors are rated at 15 volts they barely get warm now. Other than that, DCC would be the only option, since you can adjust the top voltage to the motor.

I'm not sure why the brushes wore out on that first motor I used. oddly enough, it had a bad bearing that would squeal sometimes at high speed (just like the orginal PT) no matter how much oil I put on it. They might have given out due to too much oil on the brushes, but all of the other repowers I've done with these motors are in locos I don't run very often, so I'm not sure how they will hold up over time.

I take what I can get for free as far as motors go. I think the few I've used were 5.9 volts. I don't run them enough to know long-term results, but since the motor was free I don't worry about it.
