I have a 70's era Mantua/Tyco kit that I'm in the process of repainting. Cheapy ol' lacquer paint just didn't hold up. I need some advice. Is it to totally coat the whole frame and tender trucks in paint? Or is there areas that need to be bare metal? Also, is there somebody here I can send off my drivers to get repainted? Everytime I remove side rods, my wheels seem to go outta quarter! " Heck with counting 'em rivets, TRAINS ARE FOR FUN! Not called the Mad Scientist for nothing either!"

Do not remove the drivers or the side rods when painting your drivers. Make sure that you have removed the motor so that the wheel assembly can freely rotate.
You will need to turn the wheels slowly as you paint them. Using an airbrush is the best method to use, since you need to exercise control of the flow and speed. A brush or a can of spray paint cannot deliver that.
Once the drivers are painted, take a q-tip and with lacquer thinner, rub the wheel surface to remove any paint from the contact surface.
I highly suggest that you get the DVD "How to paint a Steam Locomotive." You can find them on eBay or Google Search. It may even be on Youtube. The information there is invaluable!
There is no need for you to remove your wheels from the axles. Ship it Texas on the Lone Star Route!
