Here's a "door knocker" I got out of my grandpa's antiques:

The spike is hinged and can be lifted to knock against the shoe.

He also had a "decoration" that was a bug or grasshopper made out of a spike. I've seen them at flea markets in the past. Basically the head of the spike is the head of the bug, then heavy wire is welded on to make legs and antennae. The whole thing is painted up like a bug. I guess it makes a paper weight or decoration of some sort.

By the way, I used to love finding these things. I've also read stories of making knives out of them, but I've not done it myself.

EDIT: I just did a quick google search for "railroad spike knife" and it looks like there's lots of info. Even YouTube videos. Could be fun.

With a welder, the possibilities are unlimited. How about :

- welding two together, heads at opposite ends, put some HO track on top securely, and you have a small display for an engine or some cars for your desktop.

- paint them gold and sell them as souvenirs

- Make an INdiana Jones boobytrap for burglers in your house.

- Dang, fresh out of other ideas for the moment

A lot of guys make their forge from a brake drum and stoke it with a hair dryer.

Here's something like the "bug" I was talking about earlier:
