Amazing and monumentally huge. I would love to see how the place is directed and what kind of Financing goes into something like this. As we discussed, the local model train club, here, since 1950, is more like an assemblage of thirty different ideas going off in different directions. Many of them less than ideal, such as underground interchanges and antique block wiring that has shorted out several locomotives. The place is a Tower of Babel of model rail.
We all complain about how it should be different, most of us, at least, but somehow it still keeps going on for 75 years, through embezzlement (once), small hands (often), and general bickering. I just can't help but wonder how something as complex and vast as Hicksville keeps it together.
That's me narrating, and my eldest daughter and her pal. The Hispanic gentleman is the late "Moose" Yarbrough, a professional model railroader who's clients spanned Europe and included Rod Steward. He was a great guy and gave so much of himself to the Club, that much is for sure.

Yes the West Island Model Railroad Club in Hicksville New York appears financially stable, surviving through member contributions, public events like and its nonprofit status, focusing on building and operating an extensive HO-scale layout demonstrating an active, dedicated community that sustains the club through shared passion and financial support rather than relying on large external funding for survival.
Evidence of Financial Stability & Activity: Long-Standing Nonprofit: Established in 1947, the WIMRC is a non-profit, relying on its members and community engagement.
Active Operations: They run large-scale, realistic HO gauge layouts, with recent focus on building a new A&W system, indicating ongoing investment.
Public Events: Events like IslandOps (a major operations weekend) generate interest and likely revenue through attendance, supporting the club.
Community Focus: The club thrives on member involvement in planning, building, and operating, fostering a dedicated base that contributes financially and through labor.
How They Stay Afloat:
Membership Dues: As a non-profit, member fees are a primary source of funding. Public Showcases: Hosting open houses and major events brings in visitors and potential donations, says this Facebook page.
Shared Passion: The dedication of its members to building and enjoying the massive layout ensures continued commitment and financial support, making it a vibrant hub for model railroading in the NYC area.
In essence the West Island Model Railroad Club sustains itself through a strong local model railroading community and strategic public engagement, rather than large, singular funding sources.
