Hello all,
It's been a while, but I'd like some help, please? I'm getting some British-made driving wheels and parts to do a swap on a Mantua Camelback 2-8-2.
The reason for the "swap" is to make the model match as close as possible to the prototype Lehigh Valley Camelback 2-8-2 (only ones ever made). 56" drivers vs 61.5" Mantua standard drivers are a rather big difference. I do have a (junk) brass Camelback 2-8-2, which will be rebuilt too- but I determined that wheel swaps on Mantua locos, is less expensive than hunting for brass (only 250 brass models were made!).
So the Questions are:
1) Is the difference between 3mm and 1/8" a big deal (especially when mounting a Mantua driving gear)?
2) How difficult is it to pull the gears off of a Mantua axle (I'll be using a NWSL "The Puller" for the job)?
3) If I use all insulated wheels, would Mantua tank loco wipers work (with the enlarged gap between wheels, because of the smaller drivers) for the right-side pick-up?
4) Does anyone here on TYCO Forums- have experience with Romford and/or Markits wheels?
Thanks in advanced.

1) Is the difference between 3mm and 1/8" a big deal (especially when mounting a Mantua driving gear)? 1/8" is .006 inches larger than 3mm. I assume that would make the gear and the bearings a little sloppy, though I don't know if it's enough to matter.
2) How difficult is it to pull the gears off of a Mantua axle (I'll be using a NWSL "The Puller" for the job)? Mantua uses plastic gears, so they shouldn't be hard to pull.
3) If I use all insulated wheels, would Mantua tank loco wipers work (with the enlarged gap between wheels, because of the smaller drivers) for the right-side pick-up? It sounds like it should work. You should use a couple of them to catch all 4 drivers on the right side of the locomotive.
4) Does anyone here on TYCO Forums- have experience with Romford and/or Markits wheels? Not I.
Look also at the crank pins on the wheels. Mantua uses a 0-80 shouldered screw for a crank pin. I don't know how the crank pins attach for the new wheels. I'd think you'd want to use the Mantua connecting rods and valve gear, because they match the spacing of the drivers.
