As we approach July and the heat of summer, I thought it would be cool to show some railroading in the snow... The Canadian members of this forum should recognize this MLW built loco.

Geez, there is interest... The early days the No Hope and Ivy Poison, as the employees called it, were a lot of fun... for some. The dead engineer shown here was my brother-in-law! My dad had him shot for knocking up my sister before they were married!

Actually, this is a staged holdup held for the amusement of the paying passengers although Jim and Martha did get together as stated. They both were married to others at the time and dear old Dad did have to be restrained. Theres something about a steam railroad, the smell of hot grease and soft coal smoke, that makes one randy...

That's really neat Loop and Hook, Thanks. It reminds me of being 10 at Cedar Point Ohio. They had a steam train that gets held up by bandits. I had a Sheriff's badge on . The bad guy made me put it in my pocket but my dad kept putting it back on.

Ive received a PM requesting data on old 1533. Surprisingly the present owners of the old gal have only a sketchy history posted on their web site http://www.newhoperailroad.com/ . I have no intention of posting the complete history of the New Hope Road on this forum, but here are a few details pertinent to this locomotive.
A 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler built by the Montreal Locomotive Works, construction number 49878, for the Canadian Northern. She was completed in June 1911 and as a class H-6d was first numbered 264 and the following year renumbered as 1325. When the Canadian Northern merged with the government controlled Canadian National Railways, it retained its second number. It was renumbered for a third time in 1956 as the 1533. As late as 1958 the 1533 was pulling two-car passenger locals throughout Ontario. By 1962 the 1533 was rusting away on a CNR locomotive deadline in Allendale, ON. Purchased in 1962 by Steam Trains, Inc, a group of Philadelphia business men, the locomotive was stored in Wilmington, DE for a number of years until it was moved to the Reading Railroads St. Clair shops and completely rebuilt. On 2 July 1966, 1533 led a seven-car train under steam on a 110 mile transfer run to New Hope, PA. And where is she now? I have no idea! Heres a photo taken the last time I saw her.

Thanks for the history, Loopy. She's still rusting away behind the New Hope & Ivyland shop, as I took this shot in 2007. Sad to see her in this kind of shape. I didn't even recognize her in the holdup shot.

Nelson, thank you for the more current pic. It doesnt look good for the old gal If you look at her using Google Earth you can see that she is surrounded by three tenders. 1533s, 3028s which is apart in the engine house and old number 9s. I have lost track of 9 also! Before folks start sending me PMs and Emails heres some detail about this rarely used loco.

Number 9, a 0-6-0 "Switcher" was built by the American Locomotive Company at their Schenectady, NY plant. Construction number 70402 was completed in October 1942 and delivered to the United States Army as their number 4023. Little is known about the locomotive's early years but it is believed that it served in naval supply services for a brief period during the 1940's and 1950's. In 1952 the locomotive was transferred to the United States Transportation Corps training facility at Fort Eustis, Virginia where it was renumbered 616. Retirement of aging motive power led the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway in central Virginia to purchase the 616 on August 15, 1958, which it renumbered as their 9. It and three other government-design 0-6-0's shared their freight duties well into the 1960's. The 9 was purchased by Steam Trains, Inc. in 1966 and moved to the New Hope and Ivyland in the summer of that year.

Just happen to have a book on the Spadina Roundhouse. It shows CN 1533 in service and when it was refurbished by the Spadina shops just before transportation to it present location and owner in the early 60's.

Yes Mike, the old gal was in great shape when she arrived! I'd appreciate any additional info you have about this locomative.
When 1533 reached Reading, PA the FRA wanted to see some hydroststic testing and new flues before they would sign off on her certificate...
Anyone have a clue why I am Unable to post images to this thread?

Loopy, I think you have to upload the photos to a picture hosting site like Photobucket, and then link to them. That's what I do. I couldn't get your picture link to work no matter what I tried.
Here's a front shot of 1533. I tried not to kill myself on the piles of junk I had to climb over to get it. I think the tender to the right is hers.
This must be #9 must be sitting on their dead line, and IIRC it's the one with holes rusted through the firebox. It doesn't look very promising.
They do have a small 4-8-4 they call a 'Niagara' that they obtained from Mexico a few years ago, and are working to restore. I don't know if it was based on the NYC design, or if the Mexican railway that had them built just used the same name. This is going to be a long-term project.

I just found this page with very good pics of 1533 and #9. The large tender next to 1533 is not hers, in fact it must be from the Niagara. 1533's tender is at the very end of the dead line as shown in one of the pictures. The abandoned ROW behind the tender was a spur that used to serve a concrete plant.

Nice to finally see the photos, Loopy. Why she was allowed to end up in the condition she's in now is a crime, but I know that the NH&I changed ownership at least once, and apparently suffered from overall neglect.

In the Facebook page for this engine showed some progress for restoration.
Meanwhile I found a video of a HO model of this engine.
Looks very close to the prototype. Not my video.

Even though they have engine 40 in service it would be nice to see 1533 back. Is expensive though.
