The maiden voyage of the rare Seaboard passenger set with new Calumet tires on the
maiden Armodilloville Rebuild. She lit right up and pulls her string sweetly. The acid
test will be too see how things transition to the inner loops.

I built the Tyco Expander Layout from the 1970's and it wasn't very good at all. It had
numerous retailers designed into it, for good reason, and was a single track. This
predesigned layout is so much better.

Working in the Twin Peaks Mountain that I first saw on Microbusss's layout is going to be
a trick, but where there is a will there is a Tyco.

Nothing as cool as a Tyco streamliner, and they do look good in purple!

Here's an old Varney streamliner I fixed up a while back.

This is the before.

And after.

Varney ain't no blarney! Nice- prerunner of Life Like, yes? Very classic.
Nice freight set, a neat little four pack. That rear bogie should be an
easy save. As in "Dances with Wovles," Tyco got used "haaarrrrrd."

Yes, I think Varney eventually ended up as LifeLike one way or another. The common LifeLike passenger cars were originally Penn Line, although they were also sold as Varney for a time.

It's an interesting family tree. I recall Life Like having a reputation as
being even cheaper than Tyco, but they certainly came out
with some nice things once Walther's Main Line subsumed
them.

A lot of companies seemed to go through periods of highs and lows in terms of quality. Most of those changes likely came as a result of ownership changes.

I thought of Life-Like then as the 2nd cheapest after Tyco being #1 cheapest
then it was Model Power, Bachmann etc
either way WE all bought all at one time or another

I always thought of the Mehano made AHM stuff as the shoddiest made. You know, the stuff with the giant 3 pole motor geared directly to the axles of the power truck. Tyco was probably the best of the train set stuff. I was partial to it because of the Alco centuries which in real life are among my favourite locomotives. But my go to locomotives from about 1976 to 2004 were the Athearn blue box units. That only changed because I bought a DCC system and found that while the Athearns were solid performers on DC, they were flaky on DCC. Luckily for me, by that time Bachmann had improved their line so that all locomotive ran comparable to those Athearns, and could be found dirt cheap.
