Seaching for a late run Mantua Southern green Mikado, these came in the red box. Box isnt required however. I am building a Southern RR layout and am looking for this engine. Thanks Mike

Is this it? The only 8 wheeler Mantua I have is a Berkshire 2-8-4. It is a Mantua modified mikado. You can see the extras that Mantua added , some you cant see Like the can motor with inclosed gear tower and the rear end detail. This includes a working back up head light. This is not your stock mantua locomotive. It also has a smoke unit. From what I see this was only made one year, And I don't know when that was. The Mikado I seen on Tony Cooks site was made 4 or 5 years at least. I searched thro all his catalogs and didn't find this engine. I do remember seeing it in a Mantua box. I don't know if it came with the air tanks on top. The locos with additional brass details don't show up in the catalogs it seams but they were made.

Nope, thats not it, it had the smaller dia boiler with the stand alone front headlight, that might be a Franklin Mint engine, they did several including a Crescent Limited Pacific with all the extra unpainted brass details. That Berkshire has the heavy Mikado boiler with the older tooling on it, the one I am hunting is the smaller light mikado. I seen one on ebay last year, wasnt a custom paint as it had the factory box and it was marked Southern. The one I am hunting is probably chinese production, just prior to Model Power aquiring Mantua. Mike

The look great Ken, I love both of the newer ones, Matchbox and Franklin Mint. I have a PFM brass one from 1961 that I just got painted. I put a new Sagami motor in it, runs smooth as a watch. Hopefully I can find all the Mantua versions, starting with the Mikado, then the 2 Pacifics.

I have a beautifully weathered Broadway PRR I1sa Decapod that I love, but on the huge club layout with straight DC, 3vt AC superimposed over the DC power for the CTC block detection circuits, it has issues and is for sale. The Mantua engines run great out there, as does Bowser and older Brass. Mike

I put up a thread for the Decapod and a couple of blue box Athearns that need new homes. Yes I did well on my PFM. I found it at a huge train show in Chicago, new in the box and never run. Its a very early run, 2nd year of production and has a serial number on it marking it from the 1961 production run. Cheers Mike

If it was one of those, it wouldnt be for sale. Now if someone has a couple of the southern Mantua's and wants to do some swapping, that can be arranged. I am always open to some good old fashioned horse trading.

If its just a plain jane no, if its one of the above mentioned green Southern Mikados, then by all means yes. I already have one newer black one. Trying to stay with the newer Sagami drive engines, then I dont have to repower, just replace the rubber tube with NWSL cups and dog bone drive shaft. This removes thrust loads from the bearings in both the gear box and the motor. The motor just needs to transmit rotational motion, not thrust motion. This is espicaly important on the 2-6-6-2 engines between the two chassis. I would like to get another green Weyerhauser engine, should have kept the one I had. Need to get that stuff I posted sold so I can buy this other stuff. Mike

I have two brass units an Alco Models (70's) MLW CNR RS-18 and a van Hobbies-Samhongsa CNR 0-18a 0-6-0 switcher. Both beautiful but more show than run.... the older Alco models units are not great operators and the 0-6-0 is unpainted and therefore not an operator per say!
