Here is a 4-6-2 Mantua Pacific Kit Circa 1940's. Engine had a Brass Boiler and a different Tender then what used later with the Diecast 1950's version. Carl

Wow. That kit looks mint, and like it would be a blast to build. I love the enclosed gearbox with the center drivers.

Hey Catfordken what era is that Pacific from ?
I bought what I thought was a red box era Southern Crescent set...but it turns out I got beat on it...short one car and the engine is the wrong era...my engine is the same as yours that why I was wondering how old it is?

Chris. My goal was to get two. One for building and one in kit. But, The Mantua Reading Atlantic and Consolidation and the Pacific are the hardest to find in any condition. So I have only the kits for now. I have found some built up but, poorly done. Still looking. The other Mantua Engines form the same time frame. Was The Roundhouse Goat, The Belle of the Eighties. 8 Ball Mogul, The Little Bee, and The Mighty Mite. Carl

Late to the party, I know.
VintageHO - I remember reading somewhere that you only needed my address, and you'd ship that Pacific off to me gratis? A man can dream...
Catfordken - your Pacific is an example of the later cast-boiler Pacific from the 50's through present - yep, Model Power is still crankin' 'em out, and no wonder, they're one of the finest model steam locos you can buy.
But the newer model bears little in common with the old brass-boilered Pacific other than the wheel arrangement and name stamped in the frame.

The new Mantua Pacifics are finally hitting the shelves and they look pretty schmick for the most part. The Santa Fe sizzles but I did think the new Royal Blue would be bluer and... royaller?
So I have a favour to ask of those across the Pacific - ocean that is. Should anyone spy these shiny new locos at their LHS, could they please confirm the long haul Northern Pacific 4-6-2 is really NP? All the online images thus far show a Union Pacific Pacific. Thanks, steam fiends!

| Howdy Ken! The locos are trickling in right now but I doubt you or I will ever see them in the metal on the high street. Buying over the internet can be tricky when things get a little muddled. I'm hoping our American based friends can be specific-pacific!

| I recently unearthed a bunch of early Mantua steam engines... assembled vintage kits in various states of repair. I have a number of brass Belles and 8-Balls... but the Pacifics are all the early diecast versions with enclosed gearboxes and diecast cabs. A number of random parts are missing from each and some of the original assembly was poor (others were nice)... so I've got a real Frankenstein project on my hands. But it should be fun once I sort everything out. There's something intangible about the older kits that I just love. Maybe it's the lack of plastic?

| I just picked up one of the originals, a decent built upgraded with a newer can motor. Found it on the second day of a two-day train show, thought maybe it was brass until I noticed the "Mantua" cast in the cylinder saddle - and when I realized then what it had to be, I bought it, because I figure if I don't - I'll never ever see another one.

Hi All!
New to this place. Just discovered it and was admiring the vintage Mantua kits. Here are some of my early Mantua locomotives:

Hi ken, (from the UK?)
My email search of my a69mustang4me yahoo email account shows a catfordken twice. Once as a flickr contact and the other as a question posted by an eBay member. My user on all three is a69mustang4me. kind of pathetic, yes I know, but I have one, so I am allowed I guess. I also figure I will see some cross-over members too as I am also on the VintageHO and Yardbirdtrains yahoo discussion groups.

Hello Gareth,
I do have a shell I can part with. How much would you say? $5 plus the FCMI shipping to Canada? I think it should be about ~$3 to get it there.

Welcome, Sean. I guess no matter where we go on the interwebz to talk classic HO we're going to keep bumping into all the usual suspects. /tyco/forum/uploaded/NickelPlate759/peek.gif
I really like the Reading heavy Consolidation. Also, do you know if the rounded axle gear teeth on the Mountain frame is from wear, or if it was manufactured that way?

Hi Nelson! I guess bumping into the same people out here is bound to happen. You know, in the grand scheme of things, we vintage HO collectors are a relatively small bunch. It is what troubles me most about eBay anymore. I often find myself bidding against or outbidding friends or fellow group members and it can sometimes make me feel pretty bad when I do.
The Mantua Reading Consolidation is one of my collection Favorites. I must say, however, it was the acquisition of the Mantua Reading Pacific that is one of my most prized. I think because it was so hard to come by. After two previous failed attempts at purchasing it previously, finally getting it made it that much sweeter.
As for the Mountain Mechanism gear, I believe it is manufactured that way. First, this chassis looks to have never actually been placed under a boiler to me. Second, every one of my prewar Mantua engines (roughly 9 or more) to date have had this very same gear with the same rounded teeth. Third, the worm gear on the motor is very large and the roundness of the axle gear would increase the contact surface on the worm gear.
With that all said, I can not say for sure... You see, these engines are between 65 and 75 years old. I'll be turning 41 in less than a month. My dad was not even born until 1936 and would have been too young to play with these when they first came out. on a side...He is still continually amazed at some of the pieces I find and collect from around the time of his birth.

Sean, I agree: it's clear that the axle gear was machined that way, since the teeth are perfectly regular and don't look like any damage from a loose motor & worm that I've ever seen. A wear pattern would be obvious, because the gear would be a mess (I even have a stripped axle gear from a Gilbert Hudson for comparison). I just didn't know any were made with scooped teeth like that.
I think the Consolidation is an I10, the same loco Bachmann began making in plastic in the 70's. I prefer it and the Atlantic to the Pacific partly because they didn't make it into the Tyco-Mantua roster in later years, but the early Pacific is still cool.
