Reply author: VintageHO Hi Frank. Here is the original one, 1940's Mantua 8 Ball Mogul... ![]()
Reply author: toptrain Carl ; Nice 8 Ball. I had a few. I never had the Bell of the 80's. I held some at shows but never made the purchase. I still have a few 0-4-0 camelbacks. In the larger brass and cast just a pacific. no consolidation or alantic. My son has the mini roller. I never has any of this line that didn't run. All ran, not bad for almost 70 year old locomotives.
Reply author: microbusss neato locos guys I want one of those Tyco's 4-6-0s But

Reply author: microbusss one guy I went to in this past Feb he had a 4-6-0 for $100 all cause it was the Hooterville Canonball x.x
Reply author: toptrain here is a look up the layout towards Frankford with Stevensville up on the hill to the rear. All cars on the layout in this photo and old timers. Mostly Tyco-Mantua
Reply author: toptrain
quote: If all he had was the locomotive it is the big collector valued thing. The train set boxed is. It is the Petty Coat Junction train set. Especialy one with all its paper work with a like new box and trains looking great. The loco and cars were sold seperatly. 100 is to high for just the loco alone. With the unboxed ATSF and W&A versions going ususlly at 30 to 40. A unboxed cannon ball in good shape should top out at 55 0r 60. That man at the shows end most likely got to take his loco home with him. If enough people handled it missing some parts. But there is always that someeone who for his own reasons would buy it at 100. They are few and far between.
Reply author: toptrain Tyco old timers goes on.

quote: Bus dont fret. You have most of it. Should get that one running in a short while. The motor is there , isn't it. Also does the motor turn with power. Make sure you take it out before you attempt to run the motor. put a drop of oil on both shaft ends first, and turn armiture by hand to make sure it moves freely before applying power. frank
Reply author: toptrain Bus : I see a wire coming out of the boiler. To me it looks like a motor is there. you need a cab, bell, smoke stack, and a tender fuel insert..
Reply author: microbusss also the front door on the boiler is missing too

Reply author: 35Rem Really nice stuff there, guys!
Reply author: DaCheez Some nice shots here Frank. I've been wanting to make a mini layout for a while now. I bet an old time layout would be fun. Those Tyco 1800's steamers and passenger cars have such an awesome, nostalgic vibe. Now all I need to do is find some

Reply author: RDC1 With collections like this and others that I see on this board, I will NEVER understand the prejudice against Tyco trains. Who started that BS anyway?
Reply author: AMC_Gremlin_GT
quote: Well, it's like the difference between cut glass collectors and crystal collectors. they both look pretty, but the crystal is more expensive and has a nice ring to it. Glass is glass. Tyco is Tyco. People like it, but it will never be in the same catagory as other HO jewels. The fun is there, but the quality sometimes lacks. It's all in what you like, really. And can afford. Jerry
Reply author: RDC1 I've been at this a long time and have had trains big and small, expensive and not, made in the USA, China, Germany, Yugoslavia, you name it ... I actually like it all. I guess I just don't like it when snobby people look down on me for having fun my way
Reply author: toptrain Dave ; Jerry knows. We save more memories than trains. The train reminds us of a certain date time and who was there.
Reply author: RDC1
quote: Yes, exactly! I don't know why, but the hatred toward Tyco has been bothering me lately. Maybe because I'm about to breath new life into my Chattanooga GP20 and I'm excited about it. I found some posts on other forums, but the one below kind of gave me the real scoop. Someone had asked "What's wrong with Tyco?" on a forum geared toward the modeling crowd. Some of the responses were the typical "junk ... toys" ... other responses were downright venomous some and others were more open minded. It seems to me that those who are into what they call "fine modeling" are the least impressed with Tyco and then others just seem to "follow the crowd at chow time" and repeat the sentiment because it's popular. For me, it's the opposite. While I respect and appreciate their craft and attention to detail, I'd rather model a little bit but focus on running the trains, have as much fun as possible, let the imagination run wild and of course, let the memories come running back. Here's the link ~ Dave: http://www.modelgeeks.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/rail/5687/What-s-wrong-with-Tyco
Reply author: toptrain * Dave pay no attention to loudmouths. They will always be there. There are forums where if you say anything about not liking or not using DCC. their goon squads attack you. It starts with them trying to convert you. All you need to say is " My Non DCC Layout" in naming your post. It attracts them like flies to whatever attracts them. The title has nothing to do with running DCC, but they come anyway looking for converts. They say things like " It's cheaper in the long run". You can do so much more. The sound is superior to anything else.
Reply author: spiderj76
quote: That hatred is nothing new.... but to be honest, I found most of the responses on the link you provided to be pretty well-intentioned and reasoned... especially considering its age. So, I'll chip in my $0.03 as a card-carrying NMRA member who has won contests and knows all about "scale" and "prototypical" "railroad modeling": Tyco... IS... JUNK. There, I said it. There is little they made from 1973-onward that can be classified as much better. Even some of the older stuff wasn't as good as many old-timers pretend it was. That said, take look at my own site and contributions here, and you'll soon see that "one man's junk is another man's treasure". I love my Tycos. There's a certain charm and purpose to them... as well as many baffling, inexplicable idiosyncrasies and abundant mystery. As well as a few diamonds in the rough. The same arguments that Lionel apologists go apoplectic to justify, apply to collecting and enjoying Tyco (or any other "garbage" HO, and by today's rationale anything pre-1980 may as well be garbage). And I'm no Lionel apologist. What you must remember is Model Railroading is supremely multifaceted... and despite what the modern bloviators of Model Railroader Magazine tell you as they encourage a second mortgage for your RTR-only-stocked outbuilding empire, there is no right or wrong way to do it. To tweak what MR once used to say, Model Railroading Is (supposed to be) FUN! So. What's wrong with Tyco? Nothing that Lionel wasn't guilty of at one time or another, aside from the inherent comparative fragility of HO vs. O scale. Lionel trains are revered by one crowd... and summarily abhorred by the same group that dismisses Tyco. It's all relative to priorities. An interesting sentiment was shared multiple times on that thread: "How many people were turned off of model trains because of Tyco's junk"? A fair question: those POS PowerTorque engines almost ruined it for me, because my parents tired of buying replacements. My first Athearn was nothing short of a revelation and a savior. But Tyco also made the hobby accessible in its day, and created some measurable magic that was worth preserving, so that sword cuts both ways. DC vs. DCC; Proto:87 vs. traditional HO; Brass vs. Nickel-Silver; Freelance vs. Prototypical; RTR vs Roll-your-own; Scratchbuild vs. Shake-the-box; Build-it-yourself vs. Pre-built-at-3x-the-price; Sound vs. Silent; HO vs. O vs. N vs. S vs... get the picture? The camps and arguments in model railroading are as endless as in they are passionate and justified - just like the automotive hobby. That's a good analogy: Model Railroading is just one big eternal "Ford vs Chevy (vs Mopar vs AMC vs Europe vs Japan, etc)" debate. You eventually forge a preference and stick to what you enjoy, but hopefully grow and become more knowledgeable and respectable while keeping an open mind. So, just as a respectable "diehard Ford guy" can appreciate certain GMs (and vice versa), you realize that everything has its place and there's nothing really "wrong" with any of it. Besides, I doubt there are many Ferrari enthusiasts who don't secretly harbor a misguided affection for that first POS Vega or Falcon or Rambler or Dart or whatever abhorrent crapcan barely got them from point A to B when they first started driving - even if they won't dare admit it publicly. So do what you like, and forget about the other crowds. Or participate in both as I do, and just recognize the rules for membership in either side.
Reply author: toptrain Tony : I dont know what works for other people. They should do what makes them happy. That is what a hobby is about. Just at times it seems that some peoples hobby is throwing stones at someone elses.
Reply author: RDC1 Frank yeah, I've already had the bum's rush out of a forum because I won't get into DCC, mostly because of the cost and 2nd, I've had enough high technology. I've worked on the electronics for B-52, B1 & B-2 bombers; F-15, F-16, FA-18, SH-3 and SH-60 aircraft; MK-48, MK-54 and CBASS torpedoes; TOW, AMRAAM, AIM-9X and Javelin missiles. I like DC trains & block wiring because it's simple. I'm also into old bicycles. My newest bike is a 1963 Schwinn Tiger. Simplicity gives me a breather and I have nothing to prove with my trains. I just want to enjoy them.
Reply author: toptrain Dave ; We will just have to keep stumbling through life using our old ways and being happy for it.

Reply author: EM-1 Well guys....I guess I should add something to this posting too!
Reply author: toptrain * That look's like a later General that was released by Mantua just before it became Mantua Classics. They came in boxes as brass locomotives did. Big ones ! Bachmann and Braodway limited I guess liked the packaging and use it on there better locomotives. Nobody packaged there locomotives like that untill Mantua did, except for brass models.
Reply author: Jim Well I guess Ill add to this thread, here is my Tyco old tymer, a 4-8-0 that I picked up for about $25 at a local train store, ues it was second hand used but I didn't care, I like the little guy and plan to use it as part of my rail road for either a nostalgic train or a light duty hauler/MOW train...

I got that back in I believe 1982/83..... ALTHO, Mantua did make one just like it in the early to mid 1990's..... EDIT: Ohhh and I forgot to mention it had NO working headlight, I believe the Mantua's had working headlights!

Reply author: newhudson Are all of the above real Tyco cars (red or brown box era?), or perhaps Mantua too? I never knew there were so many road nmaes offered. I can only think of brown box W&A cars, and the r/w/b Sof76 set.
Reply author: toptrain Sam Hi. I think of Mantua and Tyco as the same company. All the cars I have posted, and there are others, were made by them. Most cars and locos made only said Mantua on the bottom. On others you could find both the Mantua and Tyco name there. This post is just about the old timers 1860 and 1880 style of cars and locos. When you go to HOseeker, or Tony Cooks sites, and look through the catalogs there, you find many road names. I hope you enjoy the photos.

quote: My wandering keyboard fingers committed me to a J.W.Bowker last June without - you guessed it - no drive shaft. I madeone by threading a pop rivet nail 2-56 , placing it inside a 3/32" brass tube, and turning a 2-56 screw on each end and turning them tight against the brass tube to lock them in place. I had to be careful to get the length right, but it works like a charm. On another note, I did find the drive shaft for a long departed 1960 Mantua General that I would like to find a locomotive for. I've been trying to rewire a Bachmann Jupitor old time 4-4-0 for all wheel pickup. It's a trial and error operation, but it will work when I get it done, although not exactly a Harold Minkowitz (Iknow I got that wrong) operation. His was successful the first time (I think!) RBNicholson
Reply author: toptrain
quote: sam It is just plastic tubing. frank
Reply author: RBNicholson
quote: Incidentally, After I drilled out the drive shaft coupling on the motor end of my Bachmann Jupitor in an unsuccessful "trial and error" move, I restored it by drilling it out for a 1/16" piece of plastic tubing, then drilling that out for a press fit on the motor shaft. I don't remember the drill size, or maybe I didn't drill it at all, but it worked, and I'm able to adjust the socket to fit the drive shaft. The plastic tubing does sound like a good, if not better, idea though. I have some miniature rubber vaccuum hose that may work, too. I might give it a try. RBNicholson
Reply author: Barry It seems like a fair number of folks modify the shaft; perhaps of necessity due to a missing one, though they seem readily available. I'm wondering now if using the tube style modification, you end up with quieter operation? On that note, I was thinking the other day (though I haven't done a thing about it yet) that maybe if I used a couple fiber washers to mount the motor in the tender of the General, that it would reduce vibration/noise? Either of you ever try any of that or have any comments about the noise business?
Reply author: toptrain Back to here with 2 more 1860 box car. Both Ontario and Western.
Reply author: Barry That's a nice looking box car Frank. Is that a custom paint job?
Reply author: EM-1 Barry its definitely a custom paint, but not by TYCO or Mantua......You can see the decals edges on it!

The only issue with that is my current layout doesn't have detail because we don't have the room currently for such a layout (Unless you don't have to post them on a layout) although we have a layout for the train shows which the next one we'll for sure be attending will be in February. I'll try getting pictures of them or some other locos/rolling stock operating on that layout for the "Tyco News" thread at some point.

Reply author: toptrain Now I have finally gotten the Mantua Bell of the Eighties. Of course passing up many of them through the years I have proved just how dumb I am. Mine needs repainting and the tender is damaged to where only a very good modeler can repair. I am lucky to have a Akane old time tender. One with much better detail. Now to clean it up and paint it. Maybe change some detail. We'll See.

Reply author: toptrain Now for an almost exact prototype for the Mantua "Bell of the Eighties," the locomotive I have found is Lehigh Valley #84. There is a photo of it at Easton PA in the files of Railfan.net. The odd peaked roofline with a short boiler smoke box. A headlight with a scrolled shelf supports. Matching domes and the same location. Actually, the only difference is the smoke stack is straight with decorative cap ( cap stack). This type of stack is still available, and a easy fix.

Reply author: RP model railroads $25 was an extreme deal for those 2 coaches, considering they were only included in Tyco's Blue and Gray Civil War sets, and those sets go anywhere from $200 to $500.
