Carl ; Nice 8 Ball. I had a few. I never had the Bell of the 80's. I held some at shows but never made the purchase. I still have a few 0-4-0 camelbacks. In the larger brass and cast just a pacific. no consolidation or alantic. My son has the mini roller. I never has any of this line that didn't run. All ran, not bad for almost 70 year old locomotives.

Gasp! You mean SOME Tycos bring big bucks? What do these 4-6-0's bring at shows, that you've seen? Are these the metal ones, or plastic? I'll keep an eye out at the Timonium show this Saturday.

If all he had was the locomotive it is the big collector valued thing. The train set boxed is. It is the Petty Coat Junction train set. Especialy one with all its paper work with a like new box and trains looking great. The loco and cars were sold seperatly. 100 is to high for just the loco alone. With the unboxed ATSF and W&A versions going ususlly at 30 to 40. A unboxed cannon ball in good shape should top out at 55 0r 60. That man at the shows end most likely got to take his loco home with him. If enough people handled it missing some parts. But there is always that someeone who for his own reasons would buy it at 100. They are few and far between.

Bus dont fret. You have most of it. Should get that one running in a short while. The motor is there , isn't it. Also does the motor turn with power. Make sure you take it out before you attempt to run the motor. put a drop of oil on both shaft ends first, and turn armiture by hand to make sure it moves freely before applying power.

Well, it's like the difference between cut glass collectors and crystal collectors. they both look pretty, but the crystal is more expensive and has a nice ring to it. Glass is glass. Tyco is Tyco. People like it, but it will never be in the same catagory as other HO jewels. The fun is there, but the quality sometimes lacks. It's all in what you like, really. And can afford.

Yes, exactly!

I don't know why, but the hatred toward Tyco has been bothering me lately. Maybe because I'm about to breath new life into my Chattanooga GP20 and I'm excited about it. I found some posts on other forums, but the one below kind of gave me the real scoop. Someone had asked "What's wrong with Tyco?" on a forum geared toward the modeling crowd. Some of the responses were the typical "junk ... toys" ... other responses were downright venomous some and others were more open minded. It seems to me that those who are into what they call "fine modeling" are the least impressed with Tyco and then others just seem to "follow the crowd at chow time" and repeat the sentiment because it's popular. For me, it's the opposite. While I respect and appreciate their craft and attention to detail, I'd rather model a little bit but focus on running the trains, have as much fun as possible, let the imagination run wild and of course, let the memories come running back. * Dave pay no attention to loudmouths. They will always be there. There are forums where if you say anything about not liking or not using DCC. their goon squads attack you. It starts with them trying to convert you. All you need to say is " My Non DCC Layout" in naming your post. It attracts them like flies to whatever attracts them. The title has nothing to do with running DCC, but they come anyway looking for converts. They say things like " It's cheaper in the long run". You can do so much more. The sound is superior to anything else.
* I run my trains in my home. My wife rules here. Even if I had sound I could never turn it up to where you could appreciate it. So sound is out. I have always block wired my layouts and DCC separate control is way, way, way more expensive. My 400 + powered units and multiple switches make a change to expensive. Even their choice of track makes no sense to me. I tried running on nickel silver and the smaller code 86 on whatever it is. Too much gouie black stuff build up. It is harder to remove than what brass build up is. Just running trains on brass seems to keep it clean. The black seems to come from the plastic wheels. So it must be causing them to wear out, or kind of melt. Nickel Silver is not as good a conductor as brass so higher resistance, and power loss is a problem. Many more derailments with the small code track. To many of my cherished older locomotives cant run on the smaller track. DCC just doesn't work for me. I use brass track on my layout that is over 40 years old. My trains run. I have no problem. At 40 to 50 dollars a chip times 400 that is a lot of money. That does not cover DCCing my layout or rolling stock. Also you have to remember the amunt of work and time needed to do the work. Most clubs now demand everything that runs on their layouts to have metal wheels. That is even more added expense. 2,000 cars converted to metal wheels. How is this cheeper in the long run? We both turn on the power and run our trains. That is enough for me.
* Like I said the goon squad attacked. Started arguments and had their friends close the thread because of the controversy. You must remember it is always them the DCCers coming into a non DCC thread that starts the trouble. For them it is convert or we will get rid of you. Very unfriendly. For DC modelers there are forums out there that you cannot be a part of.

That hatred is nothing new.... but to be honest, I found most of the responses on the link you provided to be pretty well-intentioned and reasoned... especially considering its age. So, I'll chip in my $0.03 as a card-carrying NMRA member who has won contests and knows all about "scale" and "prototypical" "railroad modeling": Tyco... IS... JUNK. There, I said it. There is little they made from 1973-onward that can be classified as much better. Even some of the older stuff wasn't as good as many old-timers pretend it was.

That said, take look at my own site and contributions here, and you'll soon see that "one man's junk is another man's treasure". I love my Tycos. There's a certain charm and purpose to them... as well as many baffling, inexplicable idiosyncrasies and abundant mystery. As well as a few diamonds in the rough. The same arguments that Lionel apologists go apoplectic to justify, apply to collecting and enjoying Tyco (or any other "garbage" HO, and by today's rationale anything pre-1980 may as well be garbage). And I'm no Lionel apologist.

What you must remember is Model Railroading is supremely multifaceted... and despite what the modern bloviators of Model Railroader Magazine tell you as they encourage a second mortgage for your RTR-only-stocked outbuilding empire, there is no right or wrong way to do it. To tweak what MR once used to say, Model Railroading Is (supposed to be) FUN!

So. What's wrong with Tyco? Nothing that Lionel wasn't guilty of at one time or another, aside from the inherent comparative fragility of HO vs. O scale. Lionel trains are revered by one crowd... and summarily abhorred by the same group that dismisses Tyco. It's all relative to priorities.

An interesting sentiment was shared multiple times on that thread: "How many people were turned off of model trains because of Tyco's junk"? A fair question: those POS PowerTorque engines almost ruined it for me, because my parents tired of buying replacements. My first Athearn was nothing short of a revelation and a savior. But Tyco also made the hobby accessible in its day, and created some measurable magic that was worth preserving, so that sword cuts both ways.

DC vs. DCC; Proto:87 vs. traditional HO; Brass vs. Nickel-Silver; Freelance vs. Prototypical; RTR vs Roll-your-own; Scratchbuild vs. Shake-the-box; Build-it-yourself vs. Pre-built-at-3x-the-price; Sound vs. Silent; HO vs. O vs. N vs. S vs... get the picture? The camps and arguments in model railroading are as endless as in they are passionate and justified - just like the automotive hobby.

That's a good analogy: Model Railroading is just one big eternal "Ford vs Chevy (vs Mopar vs AMC vs Europe vs Japan, etc)" debate. You eventually forge a preference and stick to what you enjoy, but hopefully grow and become more knowledgeable and respectable while keeping an open mind. So, just as a respectable "diehard Ford guy" can appreciate certain GMs (and vice versa), you realize that everything has its place and there's nothing really "wrong" with any of it. Besides, I doubt there are many Ferrari enthusiasts who don't secretly harbor a misguided affection for that first POS Vega or Falcon or Rambler or Dart or whatever abhorrent crapcan barely got them from point A to B when they first started driving - even if they won't dare admit it publicly.

So do what you like, and forget about the other crowds. Or participate in both as I do, and just recognize the rules for membership in either side.

Frank yeah, I've already had the bum's rush out of a forum because I won't get into DCC, mostly because of the cost and 2nd, I've had enough high technology. I've worked on the electronics for B-52, B1 & B-2 bombers; F-15, F-16, FA-18, SH-3 and SH-60 aircraft; MK-48, MK-54 and CBASS torpedoes; TOW, AMRAAM, AIM-9X and Javelin missiles. I like DC trains & block wiring because it's simple. I'm also into old bicycles. My newest bike is a 1963 Schwinn Tiger. Simplicity gives me a breather and I have nothing to prove with my trains. I just want to enjoy them.

I prefer brass too and I should have kept more than I did. I don't do the lower code track either ... why cause myself headaches when all I want is my trains to run? I think the gunk that appears on nickel silver track might have something to do with the copper and zinc in the alloy. It's a good thing that there is no real silver in it!

Ken I have the blue one. This black one has a factory painted tender. Was this tender out of the factory following a 4-6-0, 4-8-0, 2-6-0, or 2-6-6-2. all used this tender. Even a standard 0-4-0 switcher used this tender. It was called the Pony.

* Decorating old time locomotives. Little six Ken, asked me to look up some stuff. It is good info for anyone redoing, painting and lettering old time locos.

* For decorating old time 4-4-0s look at Microscale. 87-1170. They are made for civil war era locomotives of the US military Railroad. This will make a highly decorated old timer. All you need do is instead of USMRR place ATSF or you road name on the tender.

* For a less decorated loco look to 87-1166. It is for PRR steam locos. All necessary striping for tenders to make a double striped pin striping of the tender. Again place your ATSF or whatever lettering in center.

* Striping and ornaments of another type are available in 87-1168. also made by Microscale is a 1860 Western Atlantic set for old time locos.

* Also if you can find them Champ had decal sets for the Union pacific Jupiter # 60, and the Central Pacific # 119. The locos photoed at the joining of the first transcontinental railroad

Ken ; Yours is a stock Pennsy. Is my tender from another loco like the Meaddowood lumber 4-6-0. That is the question. Was there a Black B&O 4-8-0, 2-6-6-2, or 0-4-0 Pony. If so that is where the tender could have come from.

It seems to be... Self Centered!

Jumping in, I've noticed that the 4-8-0's have two different places for the blind driver... Some have the last driver, some have the third driver.
What's the evolving reason, or are they errors?

Frank,
Nope I bought that locomotive BRAND NEW in a TYCO box! Was a year or so, before TYCO was gone out of the train business! I had the box, but wound up loosing it over the years! I got that back in I believe 1982/83.....

ALTHO, Mantua did make one just like it in the early to mid 1990's.....

EDIT:

Ohhh and I forgot to mention it had NO working headlight, I believe the Mantua's had working headlights!

But its a 4-6-0, TYCO that I got as a gift, from my old hobby shop partner Gary Baer, for "Little Town Toys & Trains" that was in my home town in Pennsylvania.....it was a TYCO modsel he had 30 years before handing it to me as a 13 or 14th birthday gift! When I got it, it wasn't painted into anything but looks GREAT as the #1366 for the B&O from the B&O Power book....

See below:

I have re-done the color of the drivers to match the remaining "Maroon" as I just could not handle that miss matched paint (The driver centers are casted in color, and not painted like the rest of the locomotive is!)

Plus, I added the lost dome, you see missing as well.....On yours Frank, was the domes plastic or brass? Mine are brass, thats been painted! The one you see is factory added the one missing I found in my parts bins to add to the locomotive but had to paint it to match the other one but it all looks GREAT now!

*Here is what may be a first for tyco- Mantua. A additional number " X 62 " . I think this is the first time Tyco has dated a model train car .

Continueing. Keeping to the CP mode. A CP Water Car. Again the older one with metal trucks and a number. Even the water car name.

Rolling along. A CP low side gondola car. Again a old numbered car.

Yeah, but I'm sure you could customize it with a custom cab. I have no modeling skill, but I think I'd try just making a cab. I've seen hundreds of these locomotives in my hunts, and I find them to be "dime a dozen" in terms of uniqueness. Make this one unique; make a backstory to explain a custom cab!

In the meantime, ya'll want me to look for any of these in my travels?

Sam Hi. I think of Mantua and Tyco as the same company. All the cars I have posted, and there are others, were made by them. Most cars and locos made only said Mantua on the bottom. On others you could find both the Mantua and Tyco name there. This post is just about the old timers 1860 and 1880 style of cars and locos. When you go to HOseeker, or Tony Cooks sites, and look through the catalogs there, you find many road names. I hope you enjoy the photos.

Frank,
Did you add these reels as a load, or did the car come that way? It's a really interesting idea. I just wonder if it looks like Tyco/Mantua modified the mold for the reels, or did they mold them as normal and cut them to fit?

I was at an EMD open house in around 1985 and got to see the EMD HO club layout on a tour. The only thing I clearly remember is there was a large diesel shop area (go figure), and there was an old timer Tyco gondola like this with an Athearn dummy GP truck as a load. After that my OEM Tyco water tanks or whatever that round load was would be lost forever and the dummy GP truck took its place.

Toptrain,
Is that the OEM drive shaft between the tender and loco? If not, what did you use to make one? The one in this pic looks like it's an odd shape.

I'm not Frank, BUT, I can answer your question on the drive shaft, its not OEM, BUT to make one you need Model Airplane fuel line, tubing, the small stuff.....

How many loco's you have like the General with the shaft between engine, and tender?

John : I don't know exactly. I have about 8 tyco generals running, maybe more. 3 or so AHM 4-4-0's, A pair at least of AHM Pocher 2-4-0, 2 Rivarossi 2-8-0s, 2 old brass 4-4-0s.
and 2 or 3 Bachmann 4-4-0. I think that is it.

My wandering keyboard fingers committed me to a J.W.Bowker last June without - you guessed it - no drive shaft. I madeone by threading a pop rivet nail 2-56 , placing it inside a 3/32" brass tube, and turning a 2-56 screw on each end and turning them tight against the brass tube to lock them in place. I had to be careful to get the length right, but it works like a charm. On another note, I did find the drive shaft for a long departed 1960 Mantua General that I would like to find a locomotive for.

I've been trying to rewire a Bachmann Jupitor old time 4-4-0 for all wheel pickup. It's a trial and error operation, but it will work when I get it done, although not exactly a Harold Minkowitz (Iknow I got that wrong) operation. His was successful the first time (I think!)

Incidentally, After I drilled out the drive shaft coupling on the motor end of my Bachmann Jupitor in an unsuccessful "trial and error" move, I restored it by drilling it out for a 1/16" piece of plastic tubing, then drilling that out for a press fit on the motor shaft. I don't remember the drill size, or maybe I didn't drill it at all, but it worked, and I'm able to adjust the socket to fit the drive shaft.

The plastic tubing does sound like a good, if not better, idea though. I have some miniature rubber vaccuum hose that may work, too. I might give it a try.

It seems like a fair number of folks modify the shaft; perhaps of necessity due to a missing one, though they seem readily available. I'm wondering now if using the tube style modification, you end up with quieter operation? On that note, I was thinking the other day (though I haven't done a thing about it yet) that maybe if I used a couple fiber washers to mount the motor in the tender of the General, that it would reduce vibration/noise? Either of you ever try any of that or have any comments about the noise business?

Thanks. The only issue with that is my current layout doesn't have detail because we don't have the room currently for such a layout (Unless you don't have to post them on a layout) although we have a layout for the train shows which the next one we'll for sure be attending will be in February. I'll try getting pictures of them or some other locos/rolling stock operating on that layout for the "Tyco News" thread at some point.

A Petticoat junction Hooterville Cannonball locomotive. It is in need of some parts.

On the Petticoat Junction locomotives. There seems to have been two different locomotives made for this set. The one most common is the grey. My apologies to kova for using the photo of his loco, but I needed a photo of the loco and tender in the grey livery.

Then there is the photo of the one they used in the catalog

There was a discussion that the one in the catalog photo was the prototype. I just found this in a batch of train stuff I got on eBay. The logo is printed on and not a decal. Looks like Tyco produced two different locos/tenders for this set. If not, then I somehow got the prototype tender.

After you posted the picture of the Red C&FW Tender, I started searching
the net and found two more examples of red tenders. So there must have been at least one run of the Hooterville Cannonball Locomotives with red tenders. I stand corrected.

Maybe they did the initial production run with the red tender and then switched later to the all gray livery. Am still looking for the locomotive to go with this. Will then have both of them. Thanks for the update.

Now I have finally gotten the Mantua Bell of the Eighties. Of course passing up many of them through the years I have proved just how dumb I am. Mine needs repainting and the tender is damaged to where only a very good modeler can repair. I am lucky to have a Akane old time tender. One with much better detail. Now to clean it up and paint it. Maybe change some detail. We'll See.

Now for an almost exact prototype for the Mantua "Bell of the Eighties," the locomotive I have found is Lehigh Valley #84. There is a photo of it at Easton PA in the files of Railfan.net. The odd peaked roofline with a short boiler smoke box. A headlight with a scrolled shelf supports. Matching domes and the same location. Actually, the only difference is the smoke stack is straight with decorative cap ( cap stack). This type of stack is still available, and a easy fix.
* Also CRR of NJ #49 is very close in appearance. It also like the Mantua had the peaked roof
I have a copy of the photo but it isn't mine, so I can't post it.
