I got a n scale Atlas 2-8-2 this weekend. How can I safely remove the lettering from the tender and cab?

Is there paint under it? Or cast body color? I have used Dot 3 brake fluid to remove the colors and lettering off rolling stock, as long as it's not on top of other paint, that's ok. If it's multi-layered, then it'd be a problem. Usually they cast the car in a color, then letter on top, making brake fluid a good choice. That's my suggestion, try it first on a tiny area to see what happens first, though.

brake fluid, or strong alcohol. then sometime you have to see if you can get angel to miracle it off. this takes all the paint off. as for removing numbers or letters on top of paint without hurting the paint, if you figure it out patent the process.

Sometimes those letters are ink pad stamped. You can take a soft pencil eraser and rub them off with a little work. I have successfully done this on a passenger car I want to re-letter.
