I have a 5 year old son that is obsessed with trains. Mostly Thomas until recently. Now he's wanting HO type stuff. Yesterday I did a small repair job (I'm a carpet installer) and took a train set as payment to give to my son. It's a TYCO Chattanooga Choo Choo set with the engine that produces steam. I know it depends on the child but what age would be appropriate for a boy to start with this stuff and not destroy it. I don't know alot about this stuff and have no idea if this particular set is worth anything, but I do know that some of this HO stuff gets really expensive.

Thanks,
Kory Fox

I got this set when I was 6, in 1976.

I played with it for 2 days, then promptly took a hammer and screwdriver to it. [:0]

Granted, I'm sure your son isn't the hell-on-wheels I was at 6.

At 6, I was also smoking Lucky Strikes, was a pool shark, a part-time bookie, and had an almost-colored-in tattoo of my next door neighbor's 8 year-old daughter on my back, and could drop a 454 big block in my Uncle Julio's Monte Carlo in 2 hours.

To answer your question...

With some gentle supervision...5 *should* be OK. Feed his curiosity.

Best of Luck,
ThoR

Every kid is a little different. My youngest is 6 now and he does some things with the trains with me. He sees how I handle them and surprisely he runs them very nicely. I always supervise it though, I don't care if the trains get damaged, I'm only concerned about the house catching on fire if something should happen electrically.

He has the curiousity, you have the means, as oldreliable said, feed it. Just be his guardian angel.

As far as the value goes, that was probably the highest production HO train set ever. That might not be true, but it's close. It's extremely common. I have a chattanooga that I've stripped for a few parts, I'm saving the rest of it for the 4th!

Enjoy.
