My most dependable AHM locomtives yet. 35+ years old and still going strong. After rebuilding them several times they now sport Model Power F-2A chassis (the train set kind). These had one powered truck and one power pickup truck. Coupled together with a draw bar two A units pull 20 cars compared to 6 or 7 when operated alone. I found that if I ran a jumper wire (2 wires) from motor to motor all jerky movements went away as if they were flywheel units. The original AHM units I own and operate were bought in train sets in 1970 at Woolco's
for around $25.00 each.

I do not know how to post a picture of these in this space.
You can see them if you check my profile.

Nice to see someone else still running the AHM C-liners.
I still have quite a fleet of them, even after all the ones I chopped up.
http://2guyzandsumtrains.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=2022.html
I have notice there were a few different drives over the years. I like the ones with the 5 pole ball bearing motors that had the steel plate that bolted to a plastic frame.
I have one (it may be Lionel) that has a metal frame and a cast metal gearbox (which is deteriorating).

Clear Plastic Shells,
I picked-up a AHM C-liner shell at a train show. No one seems to know anything about this. It was laying in a parts box and cleaned up nicely once I got it home. Any Info out there?
Thanks

Clear C-liner,
I hope this photo stirs some interest.

Sorry about the size.

Nice transparent shell.
I found it listed in the 1972 AHM catalog listed as #5025T Transparent.
I suppose that should have the chassis with the 5 pole ball bearing motor.

Ray,
Thanks for the info. Was it with a black plastic chassis? Was it with a set or sold separately. Had you seen some transparent C-liners before? I guess tracking a 5 pole bearinged chassis and horns is next?
Anything else you care to share would be neat.

Thanks,

I've never seen one in person. But I assume it had a stock chassis.
It is listed in the catalog as a separate item.
There was also a 5 pole motor with bronze bearings.
There is an exploded view on the HO SEEKER site listed as Alco FM page 1.
http://www.hoseeker.net/lit.html
An early 3 pole motor chassis should fit in the shell also. The early 3 pole motor chassis can be identified by the couplers with the circular coupler springs.
When they changed the shell to the flat fans, there were minor chassis changes also and they will not fit the shell without modification. The later 3 pole motor chassis have the couplers with a plastic spring on the coupler.

Ray,
Are the Ahm C-liners proportions, Width, prototypical, somewhat, close-enough?

Thanks

The AHM C-liners are close, The nose and pilot aren't formed correctly. The truck sideframes are a bit bulky also.
I have a pair that I am trying to detail and reshape the noses a bit. They won't be perfect but closer.
The P1K C-liners look nice.

Ray,
Kudos on the scratch building on the 2guyz site. They were a treet. I'd like to see others sometime. I once thought about using a hairdryer motor in an loco. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Bob

Thanks Bob,
I have an FP7 with a hairdryer motor. It is 2 Life/Like F7 shells spliced together and rides on a lengthened old style Bachmann 8wd F9 chassis.
They run strong and slow on 0-18Volts.
