Hey Guys:

Do any of you fella's live in NJ? I bought a locomotive at a shop years ago I thought in or near Patterson, but I also remember Northvale for some reason. Anyway they were going out of business in I think 2003-05 can't remember excatly when and I bought this at a close out. It's a Bachmann Spectrum K4 Pacific and it has the usual running gear problem. I came across it the other day and I called Bachmann about it and they said they'd replace it, but they would like to know where I got it? I don't need a receipt they said just they'd like to know where it came from...

So, anyone in Jersey and I know a few of you guys are.... it was north of Kendall Park cause I got it on the way to or from my Brothers when he lived in Tarrytown, NY and I remember I got it during one of those trips... usually I took the Garden State on these trips. THe JTP only when I was pressed for time...

Thanks,
Gareth

You might try to find old issues of Model Railroader from that era. The stores used to be listed in the back.

Highway Hobby, 806 State Rt 17, Ramsey, NJ 07446-1608 sounds like it fits your description. Highway Hobby was on Rte 17, just a few miles from the Parkway exit in Paramus. Back before Malls were everywhere, we used to go to the Paramus Park Mall and if I was good, my wife would agree to a side trip up the highway to Highway Hobbies. They still show up on the web as a distributer?, but circa 2003 sounds about right for when the retail store closed.

Now that there are closer malls, we haven't been up that way in years!

Hey Helm, Bob:

I think the Ramsey one was it. Thanks. When I head back to NY end of the month I'll fire the Pacific off to Bachmann. I'm hoping they will just need the chassis and I can keep the superstructure and Tender, or at least the tender to use with something else.

Highway Hobby in Ramsey, NJ closed last year. They had a ton of Stars Wars stuff but not many trains. Nor were their prices a bargin either. While there it was easy to see why they were closing.

I am updating this topic to show people that there are still good stores to visit in NJ.
This one is located at Mountain Lakes NJ and phone number is 973 263 1979.
They have extensive collection of old and new O guage stock. They also have some
vintage HO stock by Tyco, IHC, Bachmann, LifeLike and AHM. They are called The
Train Station.com and located at 12 Romaine Road near Route 46 or 80. I bought
two cars from them. Pictures show them as well as my trip to Netcong NJ.
IHC D&H passenger car.
IHC Lehigh Valley passenger car.
Mountain Lakes train station
Netcong NJ train station. If you plan to travel by train, service is available weekdays. Weekends can be done but the nearest station is in Denville NJ about two miles away.

After visiting the store in Mountain Lakes NJ recently, I visited Lake Hopatcong NJ.

NJ Transit set with leased Metro North GP 40 engine arriving at Mountain Lakes NJ.

Lake Hopatcong NJ.

Former railroad station that is above the two railroad tracks.

Platform that is below station level.

Signals a short distance away east of the station.

Some sets that traveled westbound while I waited for an eastbound set.

Some photos of what the site looked like many decades ago.

Maybe one day the site can be duplicated to the way it was. Wishful thinking.

Man, that was a beautiful train station, it's a shame that they had to take it down. I'm shocked that since they have a passenger service still going through there that they didn't at least rebuild it that way....

if I lived there that platform would be de-weeded & de-treed
& rebuild what was there
Plus depot & platform do resemble a UK railway type

Is the survivng building in Lake Hopatong a residence now?

Couple of stations in Vermont are that now

The Burlington Station is now a Muncipal Building AND to get to the trains a LOOOONG stairway (outside)

Plus a former station in Jersey is now of all things a hair saloon

GOT A PIC OF THAT SOMEWHERE

Plus the Danbury CT station is a station AND museum

There is a little hobby shop in Bogota NJ. It may be on palisades Avenue. I may have spelt the name wrong. The Model train store in Dunellen is still there, as is the Big Little hobby shop in Bridgewater. Isn't there a hobby shop in Red Bank ? There is a hobby shop on Springfield avenue a few blocks east of where Milburn Avenue starts. I remember one on US1 in Ridgefield.

I found that NJ is a relative mecca (compared to WV) for finding cool train stuff. There's a great little hobby shop in Wildwood NJ and a private individual not too far away on US 40 that has train sales out of his garage every few weeks or so. When we stopped by there I heard a choir of angels singing when he opened the door....

There is hope that the former train station will be fully restored and function as an information
cultural center showcasing the history of the lake region. They also plan on removing some of
the excess trees and bushes to partially open the viewing area. I have some more photos from
my recent trip and internet photos showing what it once looked like.

View from westbound track sometime near 1920 when more people traveled by train.

Same view near 1978 when structures showed excess deterioration for some time. Erie Lackawanna set.

My photo in 2015 with little activity. All three views look eastward from station platform.

Westbound view around 1912.

Almost same view in 2015 but by track level. Crossover structure long gone.

A scenic stretch in Montclair NJ some twenty miles to the east.

Cute station in Montclair.

Opposite view of the station.

Westbound train headed toward Mountain Lakes and Lake Hopatcong.

Erie diesel unit at Boonton NJ.

Westbound train headed for Mount Olive NJ.

Another view of Lake Hopatcong NJ. Back to topic the model train store in Mountain Lakes
has extensive O scale and some vintage HO items for sale. Other NJ train stores have similar
items. Some more photos show former amusement park at Lake Hopatcong which closed around 1984.

Many activities back in the day.

Stopped at the train store near Dunellen NJ yesterday. Took some photos of NJ Transit set in Dunellen.

Heavens opened after these shots. Some local flooding nearby.
The store has some vintage HO and N scale items for sale.

The Big Little Railroad Shop on Main Street in Somerville New Jersey has closed after 27 years of service .

Victim of high expenses and changing times have doomed this charming store.

* With this hobby shop another hobby shop opened 4 or 5 blocks away from it. Maybe had better prices or cheaper rent. Also "The model railroad shop in Dunellen on Vail street is less than 3 miles away.

Here is a name, photo, and address.

Mrs Sattler passed away years ago. Bruce began working there in high school and, except for a stint in the service, this has been his only job. "Old Uncle Ed" passed away about two years ago. Bruce's wife has been helping out since Ed's passing. Great store! I've been going there since I was a kid.
