A few months ago, I was driving around San Antonio, just getting familiar with my new surroundings. From the highway, I thought that I had seen a turntable in a rail yard. I didn't think much about it at the time, but I decided to look into it and see what history I could uncover. So I took a look on Google's satelite photos and sure enough, there it was, an in tact turntable.

I thought that there must have been a roundhouse on site at one time. I wondered what it looked like back when it was built and for which railroad. What I uncovered, shocked me. The worst locomotive explosion in history. The story can be found here:

There's a nice drawing of the roundhouse on the next page. I wanted to get a feel for how it would look if it were still standing today, so I laid the drawing over top of the screen shot that I took:

Very Intresting Story. Goes Amongst the Ranks Of The Tank car that had a Half the tank propelled 1/4 by and explosion! The whole Screen And Night Sky Went White! Check out train Blevee on youtube, and get ready for an explosion.

RDC, that San Antonio boiler explosion is in the Train Wrecks book by Robert C. Reed. I still have the same copy I've had since I was kid. It leveled the whole roundhouse, and chunks of boiler partially destroyed nearby farmhouses.
