that guy has a problem... I think he will be lucky to find a collector who wants half of it.

I enjoy collecting, but I wouldn't want to sell everything I'd worked that hard to find. Still though...actually finding the pieces is a good portion of the fun. At least he's not a hoarder! Awesome collection!

Sweet vid...thanks.

BTW, Bing made live steam models, including stationary engines and locomotives, as well as clock work and electric.

whoah...i don't think that guy has a problem...i think it's kind of an interesting hobby (i bet tons of other collecters would've bought it) ...at least what he did was very profitable in the end, although i would've created my own little musuem given the choice...

Actually, given the provenance, involvement of Sotheby's, and the extreme rarity and desirability of the items involved, I won't be the least bit surprised if this fetches the asking price. Mind you I'm not saying it's worth that. But since this is someone who already had everythign Lionel ever made and then got bored and trading it off to get all this... well, you have an idea what "everything Lionel ever made" would be worth, right? You also know that the charmed term "pre-war train" usually denotes "before World War TWO".... and this goes way before World War ONE. And Marklin collectors can make Lionel guys seem like newbies.

Especially if this guy just went quietly about his business without attracting too much attention, I bet there are dozens if not hundreds of people who have been searching for some of this stuff with no idea it existed in this guy's hands. Which means there should be no shortage of well-off diehards looking to cherry pick.

That's the only catch I see: I wonder if the whole thing could possibly sell in one whole swoop. What an amazing collection.

My collection of Tyco is missing a few locomotives and a lot of accessories and recently I haven't bought much new from the 'bay.
I think it is going to be different around my house when I get around to selling off my collections. It won't take weeks to move my stuff though.
That is a really artistic collection. They said he had already sold all his Lionel. He's probably not a an hourly worker :)

I remember reading about Bing trains in Carsten's Railroad Model Craftsman or Toy Trains magazine back in the early '50's
