I suspect that's a Globe, circa 1948; the fold-over tabs (similar to later Varney metal cars) is the give-away. Are the top, sides, etc. stamped brass?

Yep, Globe Models for sure then, 1948-1949. I'm not sure what became of their freight car tooling after Athearn bought them out.

At first glance it looks like a Globe car. However, the box indicates otherwise. Globe kits came in beige and red boxes, decorated Globe "Precission Built Freight Car Kit". Athearn metal box cars can be eliminated, they don't have metal tabs. Varney cars, the end and side are one piece. That leaves Globe and International. International metal box car kits are knock-offs of the Globe kits. They were imported from Japan in the 50s. The HO Seeker site has an International section and International did produced an Erie box car. Unfortunately, there are not any pictures or numbers for the International Erie box car. Greenberg's Guide to Athearn Trains has a picture of the Globe Erie box car on page 153. The cars are not the same. The Erie logo is larger on the Globe car, than the one pictured here. Globe produced 8 cars, numbered 70600 thru 70607. Catfordken's car is number 78960, that eliminates Globe. International is the last car standing.

hi waw47,thank you for your input, listening to what you say i think as you say international,my main reason for asking this question was to gain access to instructions to see if its all there before assembly, which all the main bits seem to be there,so i can steam ahead ken

Ken, good luck with your kit. The Globe instructions should work well.

My guess, based on the box is International as the importer as well...possibly made by Tenshodo though as they were imported by International and I did at one time have a bunch of wood and metal cars by them.
