Thanks to you great people on this forum, my boyhood Chattanooga GP20 lives again with a Mantua MU motor. I still need a pair of side frames and I just noticed that the fuel tank pieces are missing from this engine. I wonder what year I took them off and lost them? I also have to repair a coupler, which is OK, I'll just upgrade to knuckles.
There's a train jamboree at the end of the month here. Maybe I'll find a donor engine.

Thanks! Yup, I have the whole set, but the caboose needs one set of railings and ladders. We'll see what I can find at this jamboree.

Nice!
I just robbed my extra Santa Fe flats of their trucks to repair some of my box cars.

Done, finally. One thing that I didn't count on was the Mantua GP20 rear trucks sit lower in the body than the PowerTorque GP20s. The rear coupler was rubbing on the body and the step plates were just about laying on the tracks. I also had to trim one side tab a little bit for it to snap into the slot.
To raise the body, I used two #6 washers as shims.

Next, to keep the truck centered, I cut a short piece of 1/8" brass tubing to be inserted into the center of the washers. I did file the tubing square and clean, not shown in the photo. I then needed a slightly longer #2 screw.

I got the side frames and fuel tanks from a junk engine at the show a few weeks ago. Now it has that classic Mantua motor sound that I remember! Maybe she'll run for another 34 years!

Thank you sir!
When I install the LED lighting and upgrade the couplers, I'll take some additional detail photos in case someone else wants to do the same sort of re-motor and upgrades.
This was my first re-motor and I'm pretty happy with it

I like how it looks with the black truck frames. Glad to hear you got another Tyco back on the rails!

Still working in progress ... metal railings on both engine & dummy, with the exception of the rear of the dummy. It turns out I was short that railing and posts.
Anyone have a spare? If not, I'll have to find another donor engine.
Next, LED lighting.

Very nice set...now if we can just convince a shortline somewhere to paint one of their rebuilt GP-10s in to this color scheme that would be great! quote:Still working in progress ... metal railings on both engine & dummy, with the exception of the rear of the dummy.
