Hello all. I've been working on an Athearn Hustler switcher that my wife had as a kid and after replacing the rubber bands and cleaning it up a bit, I couldn't get it to do anything on the track. Upon closer inspection I could see how the current was supposed to go up through the wheel on one side, into the frame, and then directly into the motor. However, looking at the other side, I didn't see any electrical connection from the wheels and frame to the motor. After looking through these forums for a bit, I added a jumper wire from the frame to the motor and sure enough, it ran! So my question is, how should that other side be connected electrically to the motor? Here are some pics to help out.
Thanks! Brian

Brian, just about every Hustler had a light in it ( and therefore a wire or two ). I believe since that part is missing, it also took out the wire you provided with a jumper to make the connection. When the bulb burned out, though, the Hustler would quit working. So someone probably saw the soldered wired to the burned out bulb and tossed the whole works. You just need two wires and a bulb, or the single wire you ran, and you're good to go. If you want, I'll take a pic of some of my Hustlers and show you the wiring in them.

Ok, I was wrong...I was thinking of the non-rubber powered Hustlers having bulbs. Anyway, here's a pic I borrowed off the 'net, showing the wire.

Hope this shows what you need to do, although you've probably already done it.

I believe it attaches to the screw holding the coupler in place. It's a really tiny ring terminal on the wire.

Was that your photo? Hey, blame the WWW, and Google, for that photo. Once you post anywhere pubicly, you lose ALL claim to "rights". LOL. I don't see any text across the photo saying it's Copyrighted, heh heh! But I'll gladly give ya credit for it, where credit is due .

Well SG, I just did a Google search for "Rivarossi Cab Forward" early today, and your photo is the second hit in the images search. I hope you won't let that fame go to your head.

Its definitely missing the power wire. This is a first generation Hustler. The second generation ones had the metal contact strip. The only lit Hustlers made were the two Athearn created for Lionel. They have a working light on the cab end only. Lionels gear driven carbon copy "Husky" had working lights as well. Larry

Jerry's right...there's a small round terminal end that goes to the coupler screw towards the rear in the picture.
