I think there are just as many trains that derail that don't carry dangerous chemicals, it just isn't considered news. I was on an amtrak once that didn't derail but did get majorly messed up when someone put a huge boulder on the track. The train smashed into it and it then bounced around under the engine and cars. It smashed up some break lines and the train went into emergency breaking mode. They couldn't get that car to move so we had to wait 8 hours on the train for them to uncouple us and get the damaged car out of the way. There were no bathrooms working and no food. We finally used a cell phone to figure out the number for the pizza place in town and had them deliver us a pizza to the train. We thought we were going to cause a riot bringing that thing on board.
So we get to our destination and what does Amtrak give us for the trouble? Nothing. Just get off the train. Sheesh. No wonder Amtrak is going down the drain when they treat their customers like cattle. Unbelievable. If we had been stranded on the tarmac in an airplane for 8 hours everyone would have gotten free tickets or at least a couple thousand frequent flyer miles for the trouble.
I wish train service was better in this country but it is expensive and the service is terrible.
