I've been collecting some of the old(er) makers like Varney, Penn Line, Mantua, Gilbert, etc. of late, because I like their more detailed cars. Varney was around until the late '60's, I think, and they were a fairly well-respected maker of decent quality rolling stock. I don't think they did many engines, but they had a fair amount of rolling stock available. I've seen them run between a few dollars and $20, depending on condition and type of car. Most I've bought of late are in the under-$10 range. I saw one of those Chesapeake boxcars at a show this past weekend, guy wanted $10 for it, and I passed. Neat car, though.

Varney evolved into Life-Like, more or less. I've picked up several older makers over the summer in garage sale lots. I think the fact that your boxcar is brewery-related makes it a little more valuable. From what I've seen, alcohol, tobacco, and coca-cola items bring a few dollars more than most.

I think at $10, I might have bought it. I probably would have tried to talk him down at least a couple bucks first, though.
