While staying home today from work, being a bit under the weather, I decided to explore recording sound off the Internet and find some BL-2 horn WAVs if possible. What I found out, unfortunately, is that my PC, a Dell E310 , is a low-end unit, and doesn't have a sound card, it has a sound chip on the motherboard, and this PC is not upgradeable to record anything. POC ! Oh well, it does store pics and data ok.
I did learn HOW to record, though, and when the wife came home, I asked to borrow her computer for awhile. Searching the Youtube files for the BL-2 vid I'd seen earlier, I was able to record with her PC, a much newer Dell running the Realtek HD Audio software that my Dell can't, I was able to pluck the sound track off the videos I found. I got everything from the screeching brakes to the clanging bell and the 2nd generation horn. Unfortunately, I only got a single blip of the original horn on one vid, apparently it's too loud, so they replaced them with more modern horns. Darn! Anyway, I have about 8 WAV files now of BL-2 bells and horns, so someday I can add them to a sound decoder to install in my Proto unit. And one day I'll replace my ancient (2006) PC with something that is more conducive to audio recording.

Hey Jerry. There are actually a number of free programs/websites that let you download youtube videos, both the video with audio, or just the audio. Simply hitting "record" is probably easier, but if you don't have access to another computer, this is a good alternative for your "old" computer A lot of the sites just take the video's URL and then spit out an MP3 or WAV which you can download (no need to install an actual program on your computer) Just google something like "download youtube audio".

That's a good idea for getting train sound effects BTW. If only I had DCC
