Alright, we need a thread that lists all these supposedly rare Tyco rolling stock cars with different colors. I didn't notice the plug door / slider door difference until someone pointed it out on the CP boxcar thread. Neat! Anyway, since I don't know much about the different variations in the cars that are rare, and maybe everyone ELSE doesn't either, except for each individual's niche collecting, how about we pool the knowledge in this thread, and keep adding to it? EDIT - we can also throw in engines as well, not limited to just rolling stock EDIT. Here's how it should go -
RARE TYCO CARS/ENGINES TO SEARCH FOR :
1- CP Boxcar, red variation, plug door 2- 3-
Then the next poster does a Copy and Paste of 1- CP Boxcar, Red variation, and adds his rarity contribution in 2- and reposts. Next person does C & P of both, then adds #3, and so on. This way, the list keeps growing, and you don't have to read a whole HUGE thread to find them all. Just read the last one! Hopefully the 1,000th poster doesn't run out of Virtual Memory to store the list in to add his contribution. Ok, I cheated and borrowed someone else's post to use, but at least his is at the top of the list. If anyone else thinks this is a good idea, lets get it rolling! I doubt that there would be 1,000 rare variations anyway. But this would give us Tyco <collector> newbies something to look for when we're out slummin' the aisles at train shows. And I've got two coming up this weekend. Woo-hoo!

The Mail Pouch car is very common; it was included in numerous Chattanooga sets.
The Armour/Kahn's error car combines the two paint masks. I've seen a few, but not too often. Can be tricky to spot!

Whew, with Tony's contributions, I'd be hard pressed to make progress looking for items. LOL! But at least it gives me a few clues to look for things I'm interested in. Thanks for posting that list! Impressive!

What do you think about the Bicentennial car variations? Not the First versions (I saw you listed those). But some of the other ones that were mentioned in the Bicentennial car listing. For example, there is the Minuteman car with the wrong number, cars with variations on the Minuteman outline, and then I posted a picture of a car with wrong number and a mix of the old and new Minuteman outlines.
Also there were the CP cars (blue & green) with the newer more crisp lettering. How would those fit into your list?

Good show, Tony!
I was surprised to see the CP switcher listed as *rare*, so I checked your gallery and didn't see one. Still hunting?

By the way, has anyone noticed that the CP Rail version is built very differently, when compared to a typical ATSF? Unlike the MU-2 or PowerTorque models it has a trolley-type chassis, mounted with four screws through the corner tabs.
It's very lightweight, lacking the normal (and substantial) end-weights. My MU-2's will easily pull a dozen or more Tyco cars, while this one struggles with five or six. Picture a Nob Hill trolley pulling a string of freight cars. Better yet, try it. See if you can push three cars with a trolley and let us know how it goes... Ha, ha, ha!!!
The body (shell) is also different. Notice the red side frames. They don't have the ubiquitous notches for Tyco mounting tabs. It's wierd. They really went out of their way to change the design and make it perform poorly. It's not a retrofit, the molds were changed.
Puzzling. -Todd

| Microbusss, there is a picture of the error Armour car in this post. It's a Armour car, but it has the writing for the E. Khan' s and sons car. figure that will be difficult to find, also I don't really think the mail pouch car would be considered "rare" , I see them on eBay constantly. I picked up the CP Rail switcher late, late last night on eBay, if not for this site I would not have thought of getting it, THANKS GUYS! Next on my list is the Cheesie SD24, the Milwaukee E7, and the Queensland rail if and when i can find them.

I have a Durango set I'm considering breaking up as the box is rough and the loco sat out in the sun somewhere and is mildly warped on one side.
How about the late wide vision caboose in CN noodle logo, painted red shell? I have a rough one, never saw it before so I bought it.
The BN Piggback flat is supposed to be somewhat rarer, too.

Hey, what about a Tyco wide-vision caboose in CN colors, painted red over red plastic with screened CN noodle?
I picked one up cheap, it's fairly hammered but I'm going to part out a Santa Fe to put it together. I'd never seen one before.

What about the GM&O 2-8-0, the Southern crescent and standard Southern, CP and GN 0-8-0's? I've got the GM&O and haven't seen but 3 pop up on eBay and maybe once the SOU Crescent 0-8-0. Rare steamers!

| I had the CP 0-8-0 once, or maybe twice - I've flipped so many things in the last 15 years it's hard to keep track. But they're tough to come by. I don't think I've ever seen a GM&O or Southern in person. Even the Royal Blue is fairly tough to come by. But to sell that one I had to take it to a car show swap meet -

As that list above is over two years old, and I even have a "standard disclaimer" at the end of all my Guides such that rarity, value, etc is subjective and fluid, I'm sure some revision is warranted. And tho I don't claim to be the sole ironclad authority, I appreciate the vote of confidence...
...but since I've been out of town for several days and have more than enough to attend to meanwhile, I'd recommend not holding your breath too long, in the coming days, heh heh. If you have some new stuff and consideratoins meanwhile, go ahead and post them, it's sort of a community effort and resource after all.
Once (if) I have time to revisit the list I will do so. Frankly there's plenty I've been wanting to add to my own site meanwhile, but haven't had time / motivation for either. Kids and work and stuff, sigh...
