I bid on an automobile today on ebay motors. 1:1 scale 1973 Plymouth.
I was outbid by $25.oo. Some guy kept repeatedly bidding in small amounts until he got just above my maximum. 3 minutes after the auction ends , I get an email for a Second Chance Offer.
I figure this was a case for shill bidding. I contacted ebay, they weren't really concerned.
By the way, the Second Chance Offer was $5oo.oo more than my highest bid. They said that was against ebay policy and only cautioned me about doing business with the guy.
Maybe I shouldn't be alarmed. No one else seemed to be. I've talked with 3 or 4 Ebayers about it.

I think I'm about done with Ebay. It used to be a fun place to find bargains. I've been reading about all the different kinds of scams going on in Ebay land. Is being a member really worth the risk?

I think the second chance offer sounds fishy, but it's hard to prove something like that. I've never bid on anything that big, but for what I do buy I don't have any problems.

I'd guess that was a scam. The "winning" bidder was probably the seller trying to see how high you were willing to go. What a shame. There's always a chance of people trying to game the system. I've heard others complain about the fact that Ebay doesn't seem to care that people are violating the second chance thing. They probably have their hands full with bigger problems. Still, if people lose trust in the system they'll have a huge problem on their hands.

It's always Buyer Beware. And it IS still a fun place to find bargains...as long as you're buying under $100. Risk? No one scams (usually?) for small change. Only people really trying , like your car seller, to get more, make it a depressing situation. And the Ebay non-caring attitude doesn't help, nor their aggressive /progressive restrictions on how you sell on Ebay. Still, I find more stuff on Ebay than anywhere else, and get some great deals on occasion. In my many hundreds of transactions, I doubt I've paid over $100 for anything more than a handful of times. I'm just not a "big game hunter" on Ebay, consequently I don't get burned by scammers, who look for bigger $$$ to catch. Apparently you qualified. Sorry for you there. But I'm not giving up on finding great HO train bargains due to those who can ruin it for others. Long as you're under their radar, you're safe. I usually don't buy from foreign/China sellers (usually, but I DID buy some TT gauge wheel sets last year, and had no probems, $20 transaction ), so as long as you stay fairly domestic and nickel/dime, you're fairly safe and protected. If you start looking at larger game, you might wind up in the poacher's crosshairs yourself. I just avoid that....it's like taking a walk...if you chose to walk in the low-income part of town (risky), or the more suburban, well-lit part of town, it's a choice. One is more likely to show unsavory activity than the other. The more cash you flash, the more unintended attention you will get ( and more scam activity ).

GO MOPAR!!!!
check this out....about 6 mos ago (or so) I sold a IHC Pacific on ebay...
The buyer said there was no smokebox cover/headlight assy on it when he got it..
the engine was packed in a lg Athearn box taped shut and padded, packed inside another box, w/peanuts and bubble wrap...there was no way those parts could've gotten out...we went back and forth about a week about it...I offered to give him
a refund minus the postage which is the norm....he refused, wanting that PLUS....
in short, ebay TOOK my money OUT OF PAYPAL and gave it to this jerk, who got a free, hard to find smokebox cover and h/l assy...my feedback got screwed...and I got the engine back in pieces, In the same box I shipped it in... I had to rebuild it to sell it...
If I had a way to sell my custom caboose work elsewhere...I'd drop ebay like a rock..

Wow, that sucks. Personally, I think you , as the seller, should have the option to give just a refund in exchange for the item back. Only way you could possibly protect yourself is to get a notarized photo of you packing the item and shipping it. Ebay is making it harder for bad sellers, but that doesn't make it any easier when a buyer takes advantage of an honest seller like that, either. Just goes to show there's bad pennies on both sides of the Ebay coin.

I've had real good luck on ebay with 565 transactions. About 98% of my collection has been from ebay. I got a second chance offer a short while back that may have had shill bidding involved. But I still got the item at a fair price.

People point fingers at ebay... ebay is just "one more" way for some crook to scam you. NOT the only way. I recently known an elderly lady to get scammed over the telephone... Remember those days?

A scam can occur anywhere, using your credit cards at stores or doing a transaction at an ATM....

Scam artists are everywhere ....
