They look like the diesel-hydraulic engines the UP used for awhile. French, weren't they?

Nice locos. They're definitely on my want list, but I never see them outside of overpriced ebay auctions.
They're German. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krauss-Maffei

Shaygetz, I've got the same reaction. These were cool cab units... KM is a German concern that is still in business. I believe they had a Voith transmission. Pity they did not take to our North American operational requirements. The Krauss-Maffei Diesel-Hydraulic experiment that Rio Grande and SP took on was more short-lived than UP's turbines, but I think it is amazing that Diesel-Hydraulics are used as shunting locomotives on the continent and in the UK considering the complexity of the drive systems. Here's a link for an SP hood unit variant of the KM cab: http://www.northeast.railfan.net/images/sp9006.jpgWow; what's next in this post? Anybody fancy Diesel-Mechanical shunters? Cheers, Lee

Found this listed in Austria: http://cgi.ebay.at/Rivarossi-Diesellokomotive-Rio-Grande-1895-OVP-/280578402842?pt=DE_Modellbau_Modelleisenbahnen&hash=item4153c6aa1a
But I´m not interested in it!

Krauss-Maffeis are cool. Period. If Rivarossi ever wanted to make a serious stab at the US market again, these models should be spruced up and first in line for re-release. I'd buy one, maybe two... or three!

Da cheese : They are a powered and a nonpowered. They are strange for all I have seen before had SP on the front and a number above it below the light. Also on both side top ,rear was the number. These loco's have only the road name. frank

If you like the original, take a look at the 1963 model by KM:

Talk about one UGLY loco! I don't think anyone makes a model of this version though.

| I stand corrected! Any chance I could borrow that? I'd like to try to mold and cast one for myself.

These two have been transfered to the Catford branch of the PGW. They are now on PGW property south of London. frank

Its a shame these never ran as good as they look, and with the odd wheel spacing, replacement drives are a major undertaking. I would love to see Hornby/Rivarossi make these again with some updated detailing and a proper drive with all axles powered. Division point did a really nice set in Brass, over $1200 per engine!!! WOW! I would sign up for a pair in Rio Grande if Rivarossi redid these. Mike
Still NT's, I have Aspergers.

| FYI....there is a used SP engine of this type up for sale at Amato's Hobby shop in New Britain CT as of last week (second week of Feb). Looked to be in pristine condition without the box. They were asking $29.00 and I was tempted, but another loco being offered for sale ended up going home with me instead.
