This week (Oct 13 & 15) has been very interesting. On Monday I was contacted by a friend who runs estate sales. She tells me that she has a large bin of model trains and asks if I could take a look at it. I went to advise her on Wed. She tells me that its stuff that belongs to her husband and they want to get rid of it (to make room). I end up buying the bin which was mainly TYCOs in the box, but used.
On Friday, I went to a nearby estate sale anf found a treasure trove of TYCOs, some Life Like and some Bachmann. Most of the Tycos were duplicates, but I did but two billboard cars - they appear to have never been out of the box. I also bought several Althern blue box cars and engines, all of which had been assembled. I got a several of buildings, some put together and some in kits.
I did leave behind the duplicate Tycos, life-like and Bachmann cars. He also had some super nice train sets that looked unused that I had to pass on.
My wife found several Department 56 Dickens Village houses that she liked, so we both had our share of fun.
I've uploaded a bunch of pictures for any that are interested. http://s638.photobucket.com/albums/uu107/cicsos2/My%20HO%20Layout/Big%20Bin%20purchase/
Here are just a few:

and a Navy Blue Hustler that needs some restoration work: /tyco/forum/uploaded/cicsos2/DSC05242.jpg
Plus one of the billboard cars that looks like its new:

Finally, a HO Model Railroading book, last copyright date was 1992, that used Tycos as examples. There are two "old model" cars, metal, by tomica - one is 1/49 and the other is 1/60. from 1974 and 1977 - sitting on the book: /tyco/forum/uploaded/cicsos2/DSC05262.jpg

You can get a better look in this picture - its Reading Railroad. It needs new couplers, as do several. Good luck Saturday.

Hi cicsos2,
Now that is a great haul! Lots of nice stuff. I think the Athearn Santa Fe PA's take the cake though. SWEEEEEET!

@mytyco - The Peppermint Patty is Life-Like.
@tykowolf - I agree, the Althern items look factory fresh.
I do know that the owner of the items in the blue bin had a layout in a building behind his house. I don't know what the track layout was, but he had labeled the switches and there were at least 16 of them. He packed his stuff away when they took down the building. Some of the cars are in pretty rough condition.... but that then I only paid $50 for the bin.
The other items, including the Athern and nicer boxed Tycos were owned by a retired American Airlines & Air Force Pilot. He is in his 80s and in a nursing home due to multiple strokes. I don't know if he had a layout at some time but he certainly was organized and careful with his "toys". I think that I would have enjoyed meeting him.
