Well, here is the latest thing I've redone. It started out as a 8603 c&o Hudson that someone painted it some awful red. so I had the shell blasted & painted it the way I think Lionel should have done at least one of their small Hudson's.

here's a lionel sd24 frame with a williams gp9 shell. i really like it.

& here's a picture of the shelves i built a couple weeks back for my train room. i've still got about four more to build.

Hi ; I like Lionel for the toy in it. The trains look good, Easy for small hands and old eyes to handle.

Nice stuff, smokie. I dabble in Lionel as well. If I ever get the space, I may put HO on the side and focus on Lionel. Last year I picked up a set at Target's after Christmas sale, and I'm hoping they do the same this year. Other than that, I've got a bunch of rough Postwar stuff and a few MPC pieces.

So do I! More colourful locos are usually my favourites but this SDGP249 is sublime. Smokin', smokie!

WOW...I mean the shelves! LOL. Ok, your other work is mighty fine as well, on the train kit-bashing and repaint. But those shelves...HOW did you mount the shelves to the vertical pieces with no visible brackets? It looks FANTASTIC! And they seem perfectly perpendicular as well. Unless those engines are all dummies, that's some weight on that one shelf, and it's not sagging. Any hints as to your building techiques? I'd love to copy that look.

i built a smaller one tonight, i'll take a couple pictures of it tomorrow (if i don't forget). this is a type of floating shelf. it is a pain in the @$*$#@ butt to get them right, but they do look good.

the first thing you "have" to do is find the studs in your wall. the shelves screw to them. then i use 1"x6" boards to bolt the 1"x8" or 1"x10" shelf boards to. i cut the 1"x6" boards to 45" long, come up from the bottom 4" & make a mark. then from that line going up start marking the board every 9". this will give you five shelves & 4" above the top shelf & 4" below the bottom. get a straight edge to put your lines all the way accross the boards & on each sid. then get a board & line it up with the line & mark the top side. you drill between these lines. i use 1/4"x 3.5"-4" lag bolts & grade 8 1/4" washers (they don't bend as easy.) on the 1"x6" that you marked, drill a hole about 1/16" smaller than the lag bolts through the board, then use a paddle bit to releave the area where the head of the bolt & washer will fit below the back of the board. when you get your measurments figured out just aline your lines & predrill the 1"x8" boards with the same drill bit you used earlier. i do one side at a time. do the top & bottom shelves first then you can just use a level to get the sides straight. i hope this made sense. like i said their a beyatch to build.

Wow, that's some heavy-duty carpentry there. I'd have figured the lag bolts would crack the wood shelf. But I guess done right, it holds and won't move a bit! Wow. Thanks for the pictures, worth a few thousand words easy. I may have to try that with fewer shelves first, then work my way towards your nicely done piece. My carpentry tends to not be as accurate as my metal-working skills. LOL. But I do ok. Appreciate the follow-up for sure.

my ho stuff is going on another wall by theirselves. it will be the same but i might use 1"x2"'s & 1"x4"s instead. not sure yet.

jerry, your right. if you don't predrill the lag bolts will split the wood.

Interesting design. That's a lot to get level and drilled properly. If lumber's the same in your neck of the woods as it is here, it probably took you a month to find boards that weren't warped.

the wood is just as bad here. i had to go through the whole bundle to get what i needed, & it wasn't that great, but it worked (i made it).
