I have an Amtrak GG-1. It makes a high pitch squeal intermittently. When it does this it slows down dramatically. Any idea what is causing this. I have re-glued the pinion so I do not believe that is slipping.

It's the sound of a bad bearing. One of them has run dry, and the shaft is orbiting around the inside diameter very rapidly rather than sliding inside it -- that's what causes the screeching and the speed reduction. It always seems to be the bearing on the pinion side that has this problem, and you can oil that one pretty liberally without worrying about fouling the brushes, so put a drop on it and see how it runs.

Whether it lasts or not is another issue. Sintered bronze bearings have oil injected into them under heat and pressure in the factory, and it's hard to get them to reabsorb oil without using the same method. I've had luck bringing some bearings back to life after many re-applications.

Try oiling the motor shaft - see my maintenance video on here of where to oil. It may stop that squealing - I had a few that would squeal and slow down - after an oil drop - it quit - Hope this helps

Also check to make sure the gear on the center axle on the powered truck is not cracked-very common, & it will cause a squeal sometimes.

I really hate to say it but looks like the motor is toast. I tried oiling it. It ran ok for a bit and then started squealing again. The more I work with it the worse it gets. Now it is to he point were it barely moves when it squeals and it is laboring when it sounds fair. Looking now for a donor loco for a new truck. I want to keep it stock rather than placing a CD motor in it.

Tim, I have a set of bearings that I removed from my 2-8-0 when I remotored it that's yours if you want it. They press right out.

This problem is what deep-sixed my original 2-8-0 in the 70's. The bearing was shot.

Thanks for all of your comments. I dismantled the original and was inprocess of prepping it for a big block. Then on EBay I found a Tyco GP-20 Chattanooga with matching caboose. The description said it did not run. I bought it to but the shell on an Athern blue box chassie. Get it in the mail and with a little oil and cleaning it runs quite and like a champ. Long story short that loco's PT went in the GG1. The GG1 is now quieter than some of he Atherns I have.
