Does the new MRC sound decoder operate only on DCC. The cost according to the add in MR Craftsman is $49. Could not find anything on their site, MRC.

| I just tested mine on analog power and it didn't run. Didn't bother to check the pamphlet to see if it should, but my Tech II should have been up to the task as it handles two QSI sound decoders with no trouble.

I put an MRC Sheer Brilliance DCC and Sound decoder in an Athearn RTR SD40 just recently.
Still tinkering with installing a small enough speaker to fit nicely inside the shell. MRC provided 2 speakers and both were too big...in fact the larger one I thought might only be at home in an O-gauge F-unit!
Anyway, the unit powered up on my analog system...but NO movement. The sound worked in DC, but at full throttle I got ZERO movement from the loco.
Adjustments to a couple variables that seemingly should have allowed it to operate on analog track still did NOTHING.
Can't say I'll be buying any other MRC DCC-Sound units. I do have a Digitrax Zephyr DCC system now and it does work on it, but I'm more happy with the Lenz Gold Series and Digitrax decoders I've done since the MRC.
Just put in the Digitrax F40PH DCC-Sound unit in a Kato Amtrak F40PH. It took less than 5 minutes to do and was an easy job and works great.
