FINALLY! after 3 years! [Yeah!] [Yes!]

As a canadian Lionel exclusive, that CN coil car is one of the rarest of birds - even the hallowed Lionel Steam Freedom Train, LifeLike McDonald's, Sohio tankers and other vaunted "rarities" turn up infinitely more frequently! While this one is overlooked and cheap, just try to find one. I don' hafta to look no mores! [:D] [:D] [:D]

Those operating dome-lid covered gons are my absolute FAVORITE of "oddball RTR HO". And now with the centerpiece accounted for, I can finally snag the commoners I've passed, like Burlington and N&W, etc...

If anyone has pics of other examples, feel free to share. There's a few I don;t have so if you want to part with them, let me know...

I can't wait to get a string of all these together.

Yeah... the two Lionel coil cars that everyone knows are the P&LE (jade green) and B&LE (orange) versions, released in the US, and also by Bachamnn (with and without variant silver roofs). And then of course AHM did this car in a bunch of other roadnames - I'm aware of CBQ, IC, N&W, EJ&E. The IC version looks especially cool.

But the CN version was only done by Lionel, only in Canada, only for one year or so. If you like those cars, that's the bear to find.

I have no idea what the loads are. Never heard of PMI either. Kind of intrigued by that one myself...

PMI was Model Power's lower line in the '70s...yes I'll give you a minute to collect yourself and debate that one...

I have a mid/late '70s catalog that features both Model Power and PMI items. It's hard to determine where the line is drawn and what the standards were that determined the difference between the two lines. It all seems about the same to me. Certainly no Athearn Genesis versus Athearn Ready-To-Roll here.

That Coil Car also turns up in the early 1970s Life-Like line. The 1974 Life-Like catalog displays the Illinois Central (orange car with black roof) and EJ&E (black car with yellow roof). Life-Like called it a Cable Dispensing Car in this catalog. They don't show it, but it is also listed as being available in DT&I. And naturally it is the very same car that AHM sold, believe the roadnames are even duplicates of what can possibly be found in AHM boxes.

Is the Lionel Coil Car made in Hong Kong by Kader or is it RSO Yugoslovia? Think the AHM's and Life-Like's are Europe and I wanna say Yugoslovia...while the Bachmann and Lionel-HO examples appear to be the same tooling but were done by Kader in Hong Kong.

Wow. You mean there was a low-end Model Power? Isn;t that like saying Yugo introduced a cheaper, more entry-level car?? [:0] On the other hand, maybe that explains their cylindrical hopper....

I'm pretty sure the Lionel/Bachmann cars are Kaders. They say hong kong (or carry a "Made in Taiwan" sticker, I forget which). Didn't know Life-Like sold those too... I'll have to look for them.

And since you did so well on the Flexi-Flo, here's a challenge: You ever see a prototype photo for these cars? I've looked and looked - by roadnames and car type - and still can't find one??

The prototype for the "coil car" was a series of gondolas built for the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie. The idea was for the clam-shell hood to shelter coiled rolls of steel. Unfortunately, the "idea" didn't work out well due to mechanical difficulties with the hood. The railroad removed the hoods and continued using the cars as gondolas. I believe some, if not all of the cars are still in use today. Spotting features include a few curved ribs on the side of the cars to accomodate the retracted hood.

DetroitTerminal - Thanks for the info. I actually did suspect they were done for the P&LE, but I've tried googling and get no results. But since you've affirmed that, I can maybe dig a little deeper.

I always thought that hood would be a bear to open.

I DID finally find a pic of one car, still in use, without the hood. The two curved ribs are a dead giveaway! I live how that Jade Green has turned all Brunswick over the years too.

Now if I could find a pic with the hood...

Hi,
I collect all things HO factory decorated for the CANADIAN NATIONAL family (CN, CV, DWP, GT, GTW, etc), so I am fairly familiar with CN models. The LIONEL CN Coil car is really not that rare (even in MINT condition with the coil load), at least on eBay. I have picked up several of them in the last 3 or 4 years. In fact, one of the most rare CANADIAN only released LIONEL HO piece is the DWP 41' boxcar, and there have been about 6 of those on eBay in the last 5 years (they have gone for between $60 and $120 each).

Man, I wish I met you a couple years ago! I sold about 12 of those things in various roadnames on eBay. The same car was made by Bachmann, Lionel and maybe others. I sold some B&LE, P&LE, CN, N&W and CB&Q coil gons. The entire lot went for not many bucks as I recall.

I have found eBay a good source for out of production stuff, and have filled out my collection substantially since starting to use eBay in 2001.
As always, "buyer beware" though - check the sellers feedbacks before bidding.

Heh, you wanna look for me? I'd been looking fairly regularly (at least a search every two weeks and sometimes more than that, and more in-depth as time allowed) for that car for 3 years. I'd be of the mond that "several" in 3 or 4 years is still not too common. Compared to the other "rarities" discussed here, such as the allegedly "rare" GS-4 Steam Freedom Train set with display car #105 (which is available at least weekly), the "rare" and pricey Life-like McDonald's (a handful per month), and the Tyco Sohio (I have seen three on ebay in the last 4 months)... I came across dozens those and other "rarities" in the time it took to find one CN coil car. My point is that Rarity is relative. Especially where these cars are concerned - as you said, the rest of them are common and not worth a whole lot. I got this car for not much all told... but I wouldn't want to be told to find another.

There are, as you say, several interesting Lionel HO canada-only cars. I'd like to see the "Provincial" (forgot the real name) set myself. That one seems to be rare harder to find.

Ken,

Thanks for the pics man. Coild cars are among the most intersting ones out there- there are so many different types, and lids, all mixed-and-matched on any given day!

It occurs to me that all this discussion is lacking any clear pictures of the culprits involved:

(Back to front: Lionel, Bachmann, Lionel, Life-Like. One reason I've passed on the AHM versions, is the lack of data and paint on them. These cars above are really exceptionally decorated for the time they were made).

I love the design of these: beefy fishbelly gon with bulged ribs... heavy split-clamshell dome roof... big duplicated reporting marks on the lids. I always figured these had to be an early attempt at steel protection, since the lid would be high-maintenance and cumbersome. Which apparently it was.

So, the challenge is still out there: Find me a pic of a prototype with the covers intact...!?
