I just built myself a new storage shelf. 60 inches wide, 12 inches deep and 77 inches high. Fifteen shelves high - and I am going to start filling it up. Here is the first photo - empty. There are a few issues of Railroad Model Craftsman on the shelf and a few of my original cars on the next to top shelf. It took about 185 board feet to build. If I had better materials I could have made it about 19 shelves high, but it is made entirely of reclaimed wood, mostly "two-by" material - 2x4 through 2x10.

Thanks! I needed something - this got half a dozen boxes of train stuff up off the floor. Hopefully my next one will be 21 feet long and I can get the train room actually started. This is in my office. I pulled back a little - I have a Hawai'ian and pineapple motif in my office, and pineapples & trains in most of the rest of the house. The light to the right is a pineapple. It's off as I'm using my phone for the camera - but it's shaped like a pineapple.

The top short shelf consists of all my childhood train items not including track. The second shelf is all cabeese. The third shelf hods locomotives and loco shells along with cabeese shells. I've got some crane items and buildings on the very top.

The fourth are boxcars, reefers & hoppers. The next shelf holds sugar cars, gondolas, a single passenger car shell and the one Disneyland train car I have so far.

The next shelf is flatcars and parts, and a few tanker pieces. I need more tankers. The next shelf is about 250 feet of assorted track, followed by two shelves of boxed items and some magazines. I'm rapidly filling up the rest.

Five of the top 6 shelves are made of 1x12, the remaining 10 shelves are 2x material. The top four shelves are pre-World War II Eastern White pine that came out of an elementary school. I planed them down and you could smell decades of small sweaty children when it was being planed. All of the material in the shelf was reclaimed wood - I don't believe in wasting anything. The shelf is really growing on me. =)

I particularly like the Mail Pouch tobacco car, and the United States Steel crane setup. On the upper left of the second photo you can see the Santa Fe maintenance duo. There is also a small water tower that is growing on me. ________ Junction is where it is going to live - got to get a good name for it.

I'm ITCHING to open up my train room - 11 x 21 feet to start - until I remodel and it's the back third of the train house. I'm thinking of renting a container to store everything that is currently in that room - so I can get the trains moving.

This seems much safer than wall mounted, I think - provided it's anchored well.

And what a great collection to fill it with! White Pine Junction will be a great place to visit.
