I just returned from Branson, Missouri--three days of traffic and heat. One interesting highlight from the trip was the Branson Model Train Museum. It's a small, family run exhibit downtown with operating layouts that kids (of all ages) can run with push buttons.
Basically, they've got 20+ layouts set up in two rooms. They're mostly standard 4x8 types with scenery of all kinds (old west, forest, desert, seaside, etc.). The layouts are "stacked" kind of like bunkbeds. Some are bigger. There is a railing around the layouts, and buttons are mounted on the railing. Basically you go in and operate the layouts by pushing the buttons. It's simple and great. 5 bucks admission, which I was more than happy to donate to the cause. I was going to post my pictures, but I think a link to their youtube video would do more justice:
From what I saw, they run Tyco, Bachmann, Athearn, and much more of the "fun" stuff we like around here. The whole place really captured the spirit of what we do here--kids of all ages watching trains run around. That's not to say it's perfect--I think they'll have to keep working to make a lasting exhibit--but it's a great start. I highly recommend it to anyone who's in the area. My daughter and I had a good time.
I wish I had taken the time to talk to the owners more, but we were tired and a bit rushed. I think I'll have to set up a youtube account just to complement them.
