I finally found the second box of my old train stuff and was delighted to discover my little switcher. It has seen better times though. It was under eight feet of water back in the 1980s when our house was flooded. I took a look at the motor and it has rust and looks like hell but surprise surprise, it seems to run really well. Far better than the power torques in my other engines.
This one says made in Yugoslavia but there is no brand. I have seen similar if not identical ones from different companies so perhaps someone can set me straight on whether or not this is a Tyco.

At any rate, here is the problem. The motor works, the worm gear turns but the wheels don't turn. I opened it up and it looks like the cheap plastic gears on the main axle are stripped. They no longer make contact with the worm gear.

Short of happening on another one of these at a garage sale is there a way to get a new gear on there? All I need is the axle with a working gear and I'm good to go.

Usually it's an AHM if it's made in Yugoslavia. Look for a little triangle imprinted in the plastic, Tempo was one name associated with AHM, not sure how. I think you can buy replacement gears for them, you just pull the axles out of the long plastic gear axle, and press on the new one. I can check with my junk box buddy to see if he has any geared axles for it ( mostly likely he may ).

I have one of those also with the same problem. When they work, they run really well.

CL,
Boy that little MDT is a survivor. Those old Mehano motors are noisy as heck, but they're tough.
I have a spare geared axle in my junk box that's yours for the price of postage. They were common to all of the old Mehano diesels with a single power truck, like the C-Liner, BL-2, RS-2, etc. Make sure the worm is okay, because it was pretty common for them to split.

The worm looks okay. Would it be obvious if it is damaged?

Oh, so it's the same axle as in the BL-2? I have about 20 of those, and at least one chassis is split in half for a failed custom job I bought. I'll have to check it out, to see if it's any good for spare for one of mine. Thanks for the info!

Jerry, yes the plastic axle was used universally on AHM - Mehano diesels from the early 70's onward. The early C-Liners and BL-2's had a 5 pole motor, brass worm and axles, but I think they changed over to all plastic gearing around '71 or so.
CL, the split would probably be visible, and I don't see anything in the photo. It would also be easy to make it slip on the motor shaft. As long as the teeth aren't worn, it should be fine.

Great news then. I'll be in touch about getting that spare.

I dug out my damaged BL-2 motor frame tonight, the motor had fried,so it's toast. Took off the axle cover, and took out the two axles. Looks like the Hustler uses the two solid metal wheels, I have one with a traction tire, and one plastic one on the other. So if I combined the solid wheels off each axle, I could get single Hustler axle. Here's a pic of mine, the gears DO look better ( and deeper) than yours.

The BL-2 has a separate gear between the worm, it looks like they just loped off the outer axle shafts where the wheels go to make them. Nice use of resources.
