This is the Largest layout i have ever seen in person. The HO layout at the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago, IL. 1,400 feet of track. It has an HO scale model of the Sears Tower. Try to imagine the SIZE of an HO scale Sears Tower!
Thanks for sharing the links. I have seen this layout in person and it is great. It is much much bigger than the old O guage layout they had and a lot more detailed. Still, I do miss the old layout. Maybe because I saw it so many times when I was younger. On a side note, The Museum of science and Industry building was part of a huge complex of buildings during the 1893 Worlds Columbian Exposition and was known as the "Palace of Fine Arts". It is a shame that most of the other buildings were lost to fire. I would love to have seen this exposition in person.
I love old things. In my opinion, nothing is made to last like it was back then.

About $50.
To be serious for moment, i have no Idea. I recall hearing or reading someplace that the BNSF RR had a hand in the funding, although i can not comfirm that, and notice how most of the Locos are BNSF. Probably just a spare pocket change project for BNSF.

It is a great layout! I have seen both layouts in person. I read in an old book that the original O scale layout was 50X60 feet. I think Santa Fe was involved with the construction. There was also a massive control panel on one end of the layout. In the 1980's it was starting to show its age but is was still very impressive. Every time my family visited Chicago I insisted we go to the Museum of Science and Industry. I like both layouts. I believe Model Railroader had articles about both the old and new layouts and their construction. I read somwhere else that the old O scale equipment was auctioned off. Whish I could have bought just one piece as a souviner. I remember some All Nation F units running on that layout. Also there are some beautiful model trains on display in cases built into the wall off to the side of the layout. Plus the famous 999 locomotive and several others are on display. All in all it is a great Museum.X2F
