I bought some of these clear long boxes after much searching for a suitable storage solution. They cost about 75 cents each ( $18 plus shipping for 25 ). There are 12 inch long, and 6 inch long boxes for varying car lengths, some may fit tight or not even fit,but I found most of my rolling stock and engines can fit if you squeeze the box some ( for the 12 inch, the 6 inch isn't big enough for taller cars ). The best part is that they are CLEAR, and RIGID, so they'll protect your trains, but allow you to see in and know what's there.

http://www.clearbags.com/boxes/crystal-clear-boxes

I haven't used them much yet, but once I get organized ( yeah, right! ), I hope to get all my unboxed pieces into these, and safe from inadvertent damage.

Another solution is cardboard tubes, but they waste some space being round. A NEAT solution, if you like potato chips, is these plastic Lays Stax cans , Pringleish, but they're oval in the middle, and a regular diesel engine or boxcar will fit inside. One of my train club guys showed me that solution, I have one, and it works well, 9 inches long. You'd have to eat quite a few if your collection is large, though! LOL.

Other than those solutions, I can't help you any. good luck with your move and training! (yuk, yuk!)

Here are those clearbags clear square tubes you can buy to store trains. Simple to assemble, just squeeze into a square, and fold the end flap down. Install foam protection at each end for couplers, and you're all set! These are 6 x 2 x 2, and 9 x 2.25 x 2, I believe. the really long auto rack and superlong boxcar I can't close the end flaps, but they're at least 99% protected this way.

Below are the packages of 25 for $18 each, basically about 72 cents each. Very cheap storage, and you can view the contents, which is what I like.

So, if you're interested, visit www.clearbags.com, and punch in those part numbers in the picture to find them. I forget which catagory they were under, it took me a while going through the site to find these. Wish they didn't jump from 9 to 12 inches, but at least I found something usable.

Will (diesel) engines fit? some, yes. The 9 inch which has 2 and 1/4 side will take engines, you will have to squeeze and deform it some to bow it to make some of them fit. But the smaller engines can fit, I doubt steam engines will, I haven't tried any. I'll have to do that, see if any fit that I have. Look for another "storage tip" installment in the near future. :)

RJ:

I found pizza boxes from my Pizza Hut in the various sizes are a good depth. I usually put 4 loco's in a small box, 5 loco's in a medium for the "CC" units (12 wheel units) I use the large boxes for rolling stock and put 12-16 cars in them. I use the small bubble wrap on the bottom then pull up a fold between the loco's to protect them from each other...

Hope that helps. PH will likely sell you the boxes at about 30-80 cents per depending on size. You can fold the box inside out so you can label the contents... They're reasonable sturdy and can be stacked.

RJ, are you gonna be able to log on to the forum while you're at boot? we may be able to offer encouragment and or distraction when appropriate.

Rifle boxes.

Musket-sized, 7MM, .308, .410, Mossberg, Benalli, Remington, Winchester shotguns, etc.

A "long" box would measure 40" long, 11" wide, 3 5/8" deep.

You could get 4 rows of 50ft. boxcars, about 10-12 across the 40."

Also... 1/2" foam inserts from the Craft & Sewing Dept. of any retailer...Wally World, Jo-Ann Fabrics, Michael's, MJ Designs, Hobby Lobby, etc....should insulate well.

Make your own dividers with sheet cardboard or the foam inserts.

Check out...Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, Any Mom & Pop Arms/Gun Shop.

My choice for years has been Tomato boxes. these are very sturdy, decent size and hold quite a bit. They have separate sturdy lids. I have one box full of Tyco slot car straight track that weighs a ton, but the box handles the weight well. Tomato boxes stack well and store neatly without taking up a bunch of space. You can probably get these at your local grocery store by asking in the produce department.... I went to a local produce wholesaler and bought 20 boxs or 35 or 40 cents each... This box has 60 blister packs of Light Ups in it along with bags of light poles, billboards and more. I use "tissue paper" (not Kleenex) to wrap my loose train cars in.

Yes, these are what's called Double-walled boxes, they're much sturdier than what you'd find normally, like Staples copier paper boxes, even. Those are only single-walled, and break apart easy.

Is there a big hole in the bottom, Walt, or is it totally solid? I'm thinnking of other produce boxes which have a big opening in the bottom for air circulation.

Another box option would be to go to Uline.com online, they specialize in shipping boxes, and deliver them quickly. You can even get white boxes.

Hey Jerry, The tomato boxes have the full bottom in them with no hole.

Years ago, I started using Banana boxes that does have the large hole in the bottom. You can cover the hole with cardboard, The Banana boxes are storng and hold the 40 lbs of bananas easily. But you can get so much train stuff in one that they get way too heavy and hard to handle.
