Ebay had a very interesting offering last week: a Mantua Geep decorated in IC black with the black diamond livery logo. The item was listed as a possibly "custom painted" GP-20 with typical 5628 numberboards but resembled the engine head-ending set 6110 in the 61 Tyco catalog. I was unable to get additional pix forwarded during the auction's duration, the auctioneer could provide no further data. Was the Geep offered by Mantua in IC black, post '78? Has anyone out there ever seen a red IC bopper as shown in the '61 catalog? Mysteries... Magnolia Academy

Hello
I also saw that same black Illinois Central green-diamond herald GP-20 on eBay. From what I could tell from the eBay image this was a custom paint job applied to a TYCO GP20 and not an example of the early '60s model. TYCO cataloged and offered orange-and-white IC and ICG GP20 models during the '70s, but the solid black IC GP20 is only found in that early 1960 or 1961 catalog. To date, I've never seen an example of the black IC GP20, but I'm not a big collector of the Red Box era TYCO so I can't say for certain. The model shown in the catalog also appears to be a kitbashed prototype model and not the well known shell found on production run GP20s.
