I bought a Tyco Burlington (CB&Q) SD-24. When it came today it looked like this engine was coated with a gloss clear coat. Is this the way it was made. I saw one simliar to this at the Allentown train show in Feb. and I thought someone shot it with a clear coeat spray also. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have the same type of loco. I bought it at a train show several years ago. The paint was decent, sort of shiny. As for a clear coat, I think that was something some added. I don't think TYCO ever did that.

I remember in ther mid 1980's buying a new Tyco BN gondola. It was very glossy. But thats how it came from the store.

Some of the '80's Tyco stuff was definitely glossy, not sure why, I guess to brighten it up for the kids. I have several examples that are glassy looking, and it's not a custom paint job, just Tyco doing that for whatever reason. So what you have isn't unusual, many of my train club experts comment on the gloss of the "toy" train makers from time to time. Some use a matt clear spray finish to tone it down some, if they want to convert it to NMRA specs and run it realistically.

I have some Tyco's that are really glossy. I thought the same myself. The Rocky Mountain Line has a gloss coat look to them.

For some reason the pictures did not load the first time I replied. What you have appears to be a typical TYCO loco in excellent condition. Just like they came when NEW.
