Has anyone seen the CSX tv commercial. Starts out with some scenes that you would not think about a railroad. Then these words appear on the screen: "Moves 1 ton, 436 miles on 1 gallon of gas." Or something similar. Then they show a cgi CSX boxcar. Anyway, I thought it very unusual to see a railroad commercial on tv. Of course, Norfolk Southern had one several years ago.

I've seen the CSX campaign, and also noticed them as a sponsor in a few places.
Has anyone seen the Toyota Avalon commercial with a 1930's art-deco look, and a streamlined locomotive in the station that looks something like the Reading Crusader?

There was an article in the Washington Post paper last year, about railroads, and how that instead of them shrinking, some, like CSX, are committed to building THOUSANDS of new miles of trackage, due to increased demand for transportation. This isn't upgrading old track, this is actually NEW LINE being built, something that hasn't been done on any large scale since the '50's or 60's at least. It's a turnaround for the railroad industry, and one way they're advertising the advantage is that they are still king at bulk transport of single commodities. I've seen several different CSX commercials here in VA for them, and they usually tout the "gas mileage" thing every time, too. I've seen 4 or 5 different commercials, all for freight service, not passenger.

Sort of. Lets say that a typical diesel loco burns 100 gallons per hour, when it's working hard pulling a certain tonnage. Travels 450 miles, at 45 mph. Thats 10 hours and 1000 gallons fuel. If it pulls 1000 tons (2,000,000 lbs), that equals 1 ton , 450 miles on 1 gallon. Thats how they come up with that statement. I don't have any actual locomotive performance data handy. By the way, I was reading an article in a magazine and can you guess the most efficient method of moving bulk tonnage?
river barge.

I can tell you that on the CSX rail system that the info in this commercial is total B.S.! CSX uses the least amout of H.P. per ton than any other class 1 railroad that I know of. One rule of thumb to always remember is that H.P. is for speed. Where I work and all over the system they only use 2 Dash-9s on a coal train. Most coal drags weigh in at 14,000 tons so you do the math. Thats WAY over 1 h.p. per ton, even 1 ton per foot is heavy. Anyways, on to the point here. The slower the train gets, the more the engine has to work to make electricity for the traction motors. We burn around 1,200 gallons on a 185 mile trip. You do the math once again. This to me is false advertising. I could possibly see it though on a tote train and thats about it.

Funny how mention the number of engines. I have noticed over the years that CN has 2 maybe 3 the odd time pulling a train. And CP has 4-5 pulling a train... I would guess, you being the engineer, they would not be working as hard.
