Hi all,
almost all Europe is kind of cut from the rest of the world because of the huge cloud of volcano ash coming over from Iceland.
I live near Munich Airport, which is the 7th largest Airport in Europe. Last Saturday it looked like this. There was no sound of turbines, the only things that flew were birds.

On Saturday afternoon I took my wife and doughter and took a tour bus over the airport.

Un the way to the security check you could see those tanker trucks

Terminal 2 virtually unused

This is the road underneath Terminal 1, where you normally find lots of traffic

Nice B737 mith candy advertising

Singapore Airlines B747

This Airbus 340 belongs to Safi Airways from Aghanistan

Some tailfins

Lufthansa parked their planes near the cargo center

Huge engine

Some noses...

This is the parking position of Air Berlin

Some catering trucks were running.

A view of grounded planes

The fire brigade had nothing to do as well

And busses had no passengers

The covers of the engines should prevent "guests" from moving in.

During this time, repairs can easily be done

Another 737 (Private Air Business Jet)

This 747 is just leaving for a ferry flight to Frankfurt. For safety reasons no passengers were allowed.

This was my weekend tour over a sleeping airport. It's a strange felleing to see it like this, as airports are normally very busy and lively places.
These pictures should not make us forget about the thousands of people who got stranded somewhere in the world and still have no chance to continue their trip!

Martin ; You airport photos remind me of the years I spent working at Newark airport EWR before I retired. I do see a big difference in your airport and a US one. It doesn't mater. The photos are interesting. Just the fact that you can get a tour of the airport is very different than here in the US. It doesn't happen here. raised security is the reason. frank

Hi all,
the good new is they reopened the European airspace today 9am, airtraffic slowly goes back to normal. Still it will take a couple of days to have everything right again. Too much cargo and passengers got stuck all over the world. The bad news is that the volcanic cloud moves towards the North American east coast right now, some Canadian airports are already affected.
They do bus tours across the airport here, but you have to do a security check, similar to the one if you are going to board a plane. X-ray included and the bus is checked seperately. No chance to smuggle something illegal in!
The gummibear jet flies for TUIfly.com which is a charter airline here in Germany.
Cheers,
Martin

Martin67 - Enjoyed your photo's of airport - Very Cool. Not only are passengers grounded -but freight planes can't make or pick up deliveries or deliver goods to and from. Hopefully it will get back to normal soon
