Sadly, I had neither my cell phone with camera, or my good camera with me. My buddy shot a few with his phone, so I'll hope he can forward those to me. Nice little piece, yellow, I think from Georgia. Anyway, talked with the owner a few minutes, he said there were about 5 members of a club in Virginia, he'd just gotten back from PA, as Virginia ( CSX ) is very hostile apparently to private citizens using their right-of-way. I guess also that PA has more unused older Branch lines than Virginia, and therefore can allow that sort of activivity. I got home and found a website for such clubs, NARCOA, with sale and want ads for Speeders. Pretty neat thing! I've never seen one up close before, this was a 1973 Speeder, not too old. Not a bad afternoon happening. Now, back to my Lionel Husky shunter auctions on Ebay....

| How do the keep from crashing into trains? I had no idea there were people who owned speeders and drove them on companies' tracks...is that even legal?

well usually they run on short lines or unused/abandoned track Also NARCOA requires insurance & liability stuff like reflective vests & steel toed shoes or like what I did once I signed a waiver saying "I'm liable for any accidents or injuries & the railroad or NARCOA is not responsible for any injuries or accidents I cause" Stuff like that & I do know of a track in Colorado that is maintained & used by members
here is one I took in Bailey Yard Pic is grainy cause I took pic thru the bus window

Well, I'd imagine they run on unused track, but still owned by a railroad. Apparently CSX won't allow running on their disused trackage, since they haven't abandoned them, just don't run trains on them anymore. I guess PA is more forgiving. Fascinating hobby, as usual outside my affordability range. Now, maybe a Velocipede....human-powered.

There's a group that has annual runs on the NYS&W in my area that's always looking for volunteers to flag crossings, because the speeders aren't heavy enough to set off crossing signals. You flag on one day, and get to ride the other. I thought about doing it, but never have.

I have been in my hometown twice in the last five years or so when a herd of speeders, 20+, were sitting on the former PRR, CR now NS or a small branchline RR tracks, near the old station, as part of a legal "authorized speeder run" in conjunction with a week long rail event.

Actually, they had some Hi-rail equipment for sale on the NARCOA website, so it would be possible to get that ( priced about $800 for the front and rear pieces , fit a Ford F-150 ), and weld up a central frame for either pedal or go-cart power.
