Hi!

I'm TwinDad. I'm returning to model reailroading aftera 25-or-so year absence. Like many folk, as a kid I had a TYCO set, built the oval, added a spur or two. Literally a 4x4 plywood empire. I don't have much left from back then, but I pulled it out over Christmas now that my twins are nine.

Getting back in, I'm actually designing my new layout in N scale, due to its greater space efficiency. However, I'm eyeballing my old HO scale stuff as a better choice for learning how to do locomotive and rolling stock detailing, possibly dioramas, and things like that.

Which is what brought me here. My first loco was a TYCO GP-20 in the red/silver Santa Fe paint scheme. It would have been from the very late 70's, maybe 1980. I still have it, and I plan on customizing it in the color scheme of the fictional short line I'm developing for my n-scale layout. This will hopefully include a number of upgrades like body-mounted couplers, MU hoses, windshield wipers, grab irons, new fans, and so on.

I'll also need to fix the mechanism - it no longer runs, and I haven't dived in to find out why.

So, this looks like a good place to hang my HO Scale hat, and learn a little more about how the big guys do things...

If you'd like to "slum around" a bit and see what I'm trying to do in N Scale, you can visit my rail line's website: http://chfrrailroad.wordpress.com

Welcome to the forums. You'll find everyone here very willing to graciously help you out with whatever they can. These forums are very layed back and friendly which has become one of the attractions to it. I think it's what makes it stand apart from the others.

Welcome to the forum...you'll find that several of us here salvage CD ROM motors to repower our Tycos...their motors simply don't hold up.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. It's always nice to make new friends.

CD-ROM drives, huh? That sounds like fun. I'll have to see if I've got an old drive around. I presume there's a how-to hiding around here if I search?

Welcome. I tried dabbling in N scale too, but it's just too small for my fat fingers. As for the tutorial, look around and you'll find complete photo instructions. I've done one successfully and one...uh...well...it needs work.

Hey, you know...

As long as I'm leaving my childhood GP20 alone for sentimental sake...

I might as well do a GP40 or GP40-2 instead, so that I can just scale down the resulting decals to fit my N Scale GP40...

Anybody got a dead GP40(-2) they want to get rid of?

I could still take a GP20, too...
