Ben, I met the head maintenance engineer for 844 through my work, and he is allowing me to visit the roundhouse in Cheyenne for pictures and a tour.
Also, with one phone call, ANYONE can tour the UP roundhouse and yard anytime, usually at either 9AM or 1PM.
I can see the throat of the Cheyenne UP yard from my work, and the yard has multiple trains leaving/entering...with a frequency of about 3 freights every 8 minutes, and a few coal drags every other day. A VERY BUSY yard.
BNSF has a small yard about 3 miles away in town, with a GP38-2 parked on a siding for switching a few industries in Cheyenne. Uncle Pete has a few older switchers, too.
I will post some 844 pics when I have them.
They have 844 out right now (this week) tuning her up for the Frontier Days run (Denver Union Terminal to downtown Cheyenne). There is also a Cheyenne museum run from Denver Union Station back to the UP station here in Cheyenne.
I saw her on a pass-around track on Tuesday...black smoke sky high...and you can hear her chuff almost a mile away.

I'm not 100% certain, but you may want to try 146.550 MHz. Give it a shot anyway!

Sigh. I'm disappointed.
All I could snap was the locomotive and tender, from a distance of 100 yards, in the parking lot of my workplace. I was the only one at work at 8:41AM MST when she pulled out of Cheyenne.
I will upload the one decent pic I have sometime this weekend.
She has to pass right by again at the end of her tour, so maybe I will have better luck on her westbound trek home.
And there is always Frontier Days in July.
Have a nice Easter, one and all. -ThOR

This loco was numbered 8444 cause of a diesel with 844 on it which ironically still exists as does a new UP loco with 8444

Missed it AGAIN Thursday...we started tracking it around lunchtime...and when it got between Archer curve and Cheyenne proper...it sat in a siding near Frontier Oil Refinery for about 45 minutes, and I had to get back to work. I counted 6 container trains and a grain hauler staged near the throat of the yard at 3:10PM, so it would take over an hour to clear it all out for 844 to come on through.
Oh well...my one lousy picture from it's beginning run to Harlingen, Texas is no match for Ben's GREAT Nebraska pics. Nice ones, Ben!
There is always Frontier Days in a few months, too.
I was told parts of the turbine train and a DD40X are somewhere out here, too.
I have seen a CNW E8 and a UP E9 (City of Denver) being worked on last year. There must be some real gems in the roundhouse. I gotta get out there as soon as I have some time.
Have a good one, gents (and ladies). -R
