Hey Guys:

Added this last week. Always liked athearn Hi-f and RDC's.

On the box it says:

"The New Size in Train Sets, HO Scale for year round enjoyment" Wonder what year this is from? RDC's are plastic with HI-F NOT Metal.

Set me back all of $27.

The trailer unit at the bottom in the first photo and seperate below I don't think originally came with the box. Anyone ID it?

Cheers,
Gareth

Hi romcat, nice set!
That trailer unit is an Athearn undecorated streamlined RPO, perhaps built from a kit. Were these used with RDC-1's and 2's before the integrated RPO RDC-3 made an appearence?

Hi Gareth. The RPO is one of the 6 streamline style passenger cars Athearn made.
The area where the 72' RPO was, is where the track goes. The RDC set consisted of 1-RDC-1 and 1-RDC-3, 18" radius Atlas track and 1 - 9" terminal track and 1 - 9" straight. No power supply.
The RDC sets were made from 1960s on up. If you can tell me the set number on the box I can narrow down the vintage. Carl

hey Carl:

I guess the only thing "wrong" with them then is that the previous owner installed kadee's!

btw Carl If I gave you the model number of my two recently aquired Athearn Little monsters, could you tell me roughly when they were made?

One says: 1999 - 5:95

the other

says: 1999 - 4:95

Mine will get redone in CN or CPR

PS: het Cheezer, did you know Intermountain is bringing out one of their FP-9's in the Confederation train scheme and though I'm a wee tad loathe to admit it I toured the Train as a boy in 1967!

I saw an ad for something like that at a hobby shop a month or two ago I imagine it'll be pretty expensive though. That's cool you got to see it up close...by tour do you mean walked through the engine? Must've been neat. I remember going inside a CP engine a few years ago...not sure what kind...AC4400?...something like that. I've been through a couple of Alcos as well. Good stuff.

Hey Cheez:

The Centennial Train of 1967 was a Museum train of Canadianna. It toured the country for the whole Centennial year. When I saw it, it was enourmosly long and took hours to go through with my Mom and see all of the exhibits. The train was parked on a siding in Toronto adjacent to a shopping plaza parking lot to allow easy access. I was feeling a bit misty eyed there. this is a strong memmory and my Mom was gone not that many years later. Been getting on 30 years now and I'm getting way off topic... funny world. Geez I'm in a mood aren't I!

as to the frames, mine has still-shiny trucks, but the frame is dulled those things are really speed demons, aren't they?

Athearn made them up until about 1964. I just aquired my second one mint with all parts intact in its original mint yellow "pacific" box with instruction sheet.

Mine is obviously an older edition in a different box though original. It has a, well it was probably a red insert 50 years ago with the word "Athearn" scripted inside. It's all original & immaculate save for a tiny crack on the boiler below one of the shell retaining slots. If I can find it when unpacking I'll photo it in the box.

I have another w/o the original box in worse shape it will be detailed and repowered since it's already dinged up.

They were pretty poor runners in the day. only 4 wheel pick-up and poor power. A re-motor and contacts on the trailing truck axle will certainly help. The span between that trailing truck and the drivers should help bridge switch frogs and dead spots on track.
