My father dug out his royal blue today(we each have one). It has not been run since 1987. all that happens is light comes on and motor hums.I am about to take it apart. It has never been opened up since new(1977)wondering if suppose it probably needs a good cleaning. I even put power directly to the wheels-same results.

Weird, the other day I just cleaned my friend's Royal Blue that's been sitting in the dead line forever. Still doesn't look as good as yours though! The one I cleaned the headlight still comes on, but it doesn't even think about moving. I think eventually once we get another display case we'll put it in there.

It's probably got a good case of peanut butter grease, so it should be fine after a good cleaning and lube.

+1 on the cleaning. If its humming, it may just be that the armature is stuck. I've fixed one or two humming engines by taking the wheels off and then rotating the metal gear with a toothpick.

"Locked Up"...as in rusted or..? I've had an Athearn engine that's armature was rusted inside the magnet, but I've never seen anything like that on a Tyco O_o FYI, if it is rusted, you should be able to free it by soaking it in some rust remover...the name of the stuff I used escapes me at them moment
From what you described however, it sounds like a junker loco is probably your best bet.

is the Royal Blue same engine as the Chattanooga? Also I do hate it when a engine doesn't work diesel or steam Someday I'll find a cheap garage/yard sale antique 2nd hand store loco that don't work but I'll ask the experts in here

Several of us have had great success with CD ROM drive motors, something you might want to consider...I'm still looking for a junker for its shells myself...

I do have an assortment of Chat drive parts that you are welcome to, you should be able to salvage the various missing screws, gears and clips from the other one you have.
