Just bought a used Mantua pacific, the diecast kit version, and it barely moves in forward! runs fast backwards, but barely creeps forward. Also, the rear tender truck, the plate that holds the wheels in feel off and won't snap on!

For sluggish operation - disassemble the locomotive - literally, this step takes three minutes and requires a flat-head screwdriver.
Remove the tender drawbar at the tender and set the tender aside.
Remove the two screws under the cab and the one long screw in the smokestack.
Lift the boiler off the frame and set it aside.
Now remove the one screw holding the motor on - the screw head is the dark grey one found under the frame by the drive gear. Once the motor's off, test its operation.
While the motor's out, test the running gear for smoothness. Check the valve gear. Make sure it's loose and smooth.
Check the wheel bearings.

Before a test run and power is applied, don't forget to use your needle point oiler and apply a drop of oil on the armiture bearings to lube the motor. A bit of grease on the gears is good to. With open frame motors turn the motor armiture with your fingers. the drive should turn smoothly. Now you can apply power and test. frank
