Hey Ken:
They used to be a favourite of mine but I don't have anything it fits in with... Mine is currently painted in the older BC Rail colours and is the Freight model... a "CF"
They ran pretty well.

I remember the ads for those, Ken. I think they were built around old Athearn drivetrains and GE U-Boat trucks, so it should run well.

The E-60-CP and the E-60-CF made by Amercian GK were all Athearn based in their drive. Both were good runners and pulled well.

Here you go Ken. Here is a picture of one of the last surviving E60s.The other is A NJT like Frank's. I took this last October along with 180 Other pictures at The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Amtrak Number 603 was originally #964.. Also here is a little Info On the Engine. Carl

When Amtrak started operations on May 1, 1971, it initially relied on an inherited and aging fleet of GG1 electric locomotives for its electrified passenger service. Looking to replace the GG1's, Amtrak ordered 26 new electric locomotives from General Electric of Erie, PA in 1973. These were classified as E60, were built between 1974 and 1976 and assigned road numbers between 950 and 976 (though later the 14 units remaining with Amtrak were re-numbered within the 600-621 range -- not all numbers being used).
This was Amtrak’s first new electric locomotive purchase and coincided with orders for new diesel-electrics from both General Electric and General Motors. The order was split between 15 class E60CP units with steam generators for older passenger equipment, and 11 E60CH units with newer Head-End Power (HEP) generators for the newly ordered Amfleet and rebuilt Heritage Fleet equipment.
The E60’s, like Amtrak’s first diesels, were based on existing locomotives designed for freight service. They feature a boxy, dual-cab car body and ride on a pair of three-axle trucks. Their as-built weight of 387,000 lbs. was more than double the optimum weight for passenger service and contributed to poor running during testing. The locomotives had a tendency to yaw sideways when accelerating, placing high stress on the rails. The Federal Railroad Administration refused to allow the E60’s to operate at the intended 120 mph after they derailed twice during testing.
After numerous refinements and additional tests, the locomotives entered passenger service at slightly reduced speeds. However, they encountered new problems when turning on the tight radius return loops at Sunnyside yard, New York. The locomotives had been designed for close coupling with passenger equipment…so close that the diaphragms on their coaches would sheer the headlights off of their nose. All headlights were subsequently moved above the cab windows.
By 1984, with the arrival of new AEM7 electrics, most of the E60 fleet went into storage (accompanying the GG1’s they were meant to replace). Ten units (958-963, 967, 971-973) were sold to New Jersey Transit in 1984. Two additional units, 966 and 968 were sold to the Navajo Mine Railroad (the current status of these locomotives is not known). The remainder of the fleet (then numbered between 600-612 and 620-621, with not all sequential numbers used) spent the next two decades in and out of storage lines, being reactivated during peak seasons or during the overhaul of AEM7’s. When returned to service, they were used mainly on heavy, long-distance trains (the Crescent, Silver Meteor, Broadway, etc.) and special movements including circus and mail trains, or maintenance of way runs. In 1998, some were upgraded to E60MA’s, to haul heavy long-distance trains between New York and Washington.
By 2003 only a handful of E60's remained on Amtrak. These were scheduled for overhaul and new cab-signal equipment to permit 120 mph running, comparable to the rest of Amtrak's fleet. None of these overhauls were fully completed when word was passed down to scrap the entire fleet.
No. 603, however, was literally within 24 hours of being tested for return to service when the final order to scrap was issued. The locomotive has been equipped with the new cab signal system, and is mechanically sound. It retains much of its original equipment and configuration.
No. 603 is believed to have been built in June 1976. Unlike those units delivered with steam heat, the 603 was never modified, retaining its original underbody. 603 also retains the original doors and windows, which had been replaced on several other units. For these reasons, this unit was selected for preservation at the Museum

Someone could have swapped it before I got it. I bought it years after it went out of production. The trucks look like they belong on a Alco PA. frank

Man - I had a nice post all set, but it didn't work.
The double-cab E60CP (Electric, 6000 HP, C-C trucks, HEP generator for Passenger operations) and the single-cab E60CF (Electric, 6000 HP, C-C trucks, Freight) models were produced in the early to mid 1980s by American GK, an independent startup company.
Of the prototype locomotives, only three railroads purchased the GE E60 series - Amtrak (E60CP), Black Mesa and Lake Powell (E60CF), and the Nacionales de Mexico (I forget which one). Some of the NdeM locos wond up on the BM&LP and I believe are still in operation.
The American GK model uses their own shell on Athearn frames. The Athearn "Jet 500" motor is used, along with Athearn driveline components and trucks.
There seems to be some variation in trucks and frames. The Amtrak E60CP shown above uses the Athearn F45/SDP40/SD45 frame with Athearn's U28C/U30C/U33C trucks. The Jersey Central model shown uses the same frame with Athearn's EMD Flexicoil trucks from their SD9. The PRR models use the Athearn GE C-C trucks with Athearn's SD9 frame (look at the fuel tanks).

GREAT!!! pick-up Ken!! In peak season, they can easily fetch $80 - $100.
They run as good as any flywheel drive Athearn. I have a few of my own.
Just picked these two E60CF's up last week for a combined ~$80 incl s/h:

Both good buys considering how rare they are. I plan on swapping the PC shell for the middle NH shell in this pic:

Have only ever seen 4 of the New haven E60CF's and I own 3 of them. I lost a ~$70 bid on one this past Summer. New haven never had any of these, but since I am a self-described New Haven Fanatic, I have to get them when I can.
Now back to the madness which is my life!

I plan to make use of the chassis for a lose but perfect NH shell that I have. I also need the pantograph. The other details are somewhat there and i can remake, but there are glue marks on the roof and it would require a little clean-up. I have no use for the shell though. I'll be happy to send it to you for free if you pay for the shipping.
PM me your address and I'll see how much it is to ship. If you are in the US, it should not be more than $4-5

Got To See The Acela Express On The Bridge At Have De Grace, Maryland. Went To Maryland, Slept In The Red Caboose Inn, Went In The VERY Large And Dusty shop. Saw Some Tyco. Should Have Gotten. Well, We All Regret One Dicision Or Another.

I'll get it out this weekend. It has just been hectic here with the construction happening. The contractor is almost done with his work, so things will settle down here and i will be able to isolate the chaos to only a portion of the house.
quote:| Does The Bachmann E60CP Pantograph Fit? I Need A Pantograph For It. Now do I get the insulators? |
It should work in a pinch, but I believe they are plastic, which renders them useless. For insulators, you could use cut up plastic sprue material. Just cut it to fit and drill a hole. The pantographs are not very complicated and could be duplicated with a little patience however.
